Right, I want to improve the handling of my winter hack, it's OK, but could do with an improvement so need some help on a few things.

First off I thought of simply jacking it up, after a bit of searching on the forum I found this thread.

Which suggests an SV650 rear shock could do the trick. So I found this rear shock on Ebay and need to know if this would be a direct replacement for my 1993 GS500?

Karma for any help or suggestions.

yes that shock will be suitable. you will need to cut and drill a couple of holes on the mount.

did mine soon after i bought it and the extra inch or so in height is much better.

yeah the sv650 shock mod was the best thing i did to the gs,
totally changed the bike.

use the gs original shock as a template to where you need to drill the holes,

Thumbs Up

Go to a 140 section rear tyre, might make it more stable as well as aiding turn in. Thumbs Up

na go for the bandit 6 4.5 inch rim with the gs sprocket carrier, and run a 150/160 rear tyre

You reckon making the rear tyre bigger as well? Hmm, it is due a new rear tyre too. I will have a think about this.

How long of a job is fitting the rear shock?

about 30mins to 1 hour,

edit : heres a pictorial how to i did ages ago
https://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/RearShock

presuming you have a center stand,
1 place a peice of wood on the ground and put the center stand on it and lift the bike up,
2 undo the bottom bolt first, then the top one
3 slide out the shock
4 get the gs shock next to the sv 1 and mark where the holes should be in relation to the bottom of the shock
5 drill the holes
6 cut the excess metal off the bottom of the mount on the shock
7 slide in the now modded sv shock
8 do up the bolts
9 pop the bike off the centerstand
10 adjust the chain (it will now be too long as the distance between the front sprocket and the rear one is shorter)
11 remove the centerstand, its now pretty much useless Very Happy
12 go for a blast
13 ponder how you are going to make the front forks better Very Happy

reguarding the rear wheel,

read https://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/RearWheel
there are a few different options, ignore the srad arse on my gs, it was a short lived whim... srad seats dont look good on a gs kids

Oh I see, so I am drilling the actual shock, for some reason I had in my mind I needed to do the bike. Glad you posted this up now.

And I am glad you took that srad rear off, looks funny.

I will let you know how I get on, should be OK.

Thanks!

EDIT: Looking on that site there are some sick mods on some of those GS500's contemplating the GSF rear wheel and the R6 end can too.
