fairing repair

following my recent rockingham crash ive managed to assess the damage in more detail.

the fairing that took the brunt of the impact has cracked and warped slightly on one of the mounting points causing it to stick out.

does anyone have any experience of re-moulding fairings back into shape using a hot air gun / hairdryer etc ?

not sure if this will just melt the plastic or not so any help appreciated.

Chances are if the plastic has been bent it will be weak. Bending it back again is likely to snap it off. If the panel is fucked, you might as well give it a go though. If you're just bending it where the mount is and it does snap off, you can allways do a fibreglass repair anyway.

You could do it, but it will be difficult to get it back to it's original shape if it is warped, so you will have to be pretty good at it to get it right.

As said above, you might as well try it if it is well and truly screwed.

The fairing won't be bent. The kind of plastic it is made of is a type of memory plastic which is flexible but will always go back into shape - or break.

The problem will be a bent fairing mount or something like that. If you remove the fairing and have a look at it, I think it will be a normal shape. If this kind of plastic does bend, then it will have white stress marks on the outside of the bend, like fold marks on a piece of paper.

Find out where the bent mount is, straighten it and then see what the bike looks like.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
