So, I guess if you are going to have an accident... trapping a load of London commuters for hours is one way to make yourself unpopular!

It would appear that I managed to bring the whole of the Vauxhall/Victoria area to a standstill for about 5 hours on Thursday night!!

There I was happily commuting home on my 4 week old Sprint when the Fire service (on an emegency call) decided that breaking a red light (when it was green for me) was ok, thereby allowing me to plant myself and my bike straight into the side of it! Nice...

So I kinda remember seeing it and breaking and thinking... OH FUCK! then there is a big black hole! The next thing I remember is coming round in a neckbrace laying on the road then being ferried to St Thomas's hospital....

Anyway, amazingling all I seem to have suffered is that my body feels like it's been thrown against a brick wall (or a big red truck!) and incredibly I didn't do any damage to myself! The hospital kept me in overnight as they (and the police) really couldn't believe that I didn't have even a graze on me!! I was prodded and poked all Thursday night as they were waiting for some horrible internal injury to show its self! I've never had so many x-rays/mri scans in my life! They were determined to find something, but couldn't! Both the doctors and the Police say it was completely down to wearing the best protective gear that completely saved me from any injury! (Just wish it would have also stopped my muscles all locking up and feeling like ive been beaten from all angles!!!!)

My helmet now has a big red 'fire engine' scrape down the side of it where I slammed in the side! Nice! Guess I had better get a new one now! Plus the hospital cut all my gear off me!! (Except my nice new boots, that are still nice and new!!! hahah)

Anyway, after a night and day in A&E they let me go home.. can just about walk ok but moving is all quite painful... I'm feeling muscles I never realised existed!! Plus where I was connected to the ECG machine I seem to have circles all over my body that wont wash off!! haha

Anyway, am at home now trying to keep moving a bit as when I stop it all seems to stiffen up!!

Now then fun of the insurance and getting a new bike ASAP! Can believe I only got a few weeks out of it Sad

Oh well, I guess I have to really be thankful to my gear for keeping me safe and that the bike needed washing anyway so now I won't need to!!! hahaah

Ouch!

Rob

Jesus man...you are one lucky bastard.

What're you going to replace the bike with? Another Sprint?

Glad you're OK. Someone up there was on your side.

Care to plug your ex-gear after the Fire Service Crash Test seal of approval? Very Happy

Did you not hear the fire engine down the side street or do you suffer from the same problem I have when wearing a lid of hearing a non-directional sounding siren noise blaring out and going "Where TF is it???"

I believe if the engine had it's flashing blue lights on it is instantly at fault in any accident. Same with police cars and ambulances.

That's probably as you're sensitive to the gel / adhesive on them. I see most of my patients have a reaction to some degree with them.

GWS soon.

There's a signaled junction near me that's had loads of accidents, all from emergency vehicles blitzing through a red light.

Know someone that had a car got written off by the Police there, they paid up pretty sharpish.

Thanks for the messages guys!

When I was in the hospital I overheard the police saying that I was going between 30 and 40 on impact.

On that particular junction there is a traffic light camera so I am always careful to not jump it on yellow so I tend to roll off a little, on Thursday, It was green but I expecting it to change so rolled off a bit but then realised that it would be green when I go to it so powered up a bit to get through, I always seem to look at the right hand light when at that junction to see any cars coming from the right if they have jumped the lights and I guess by the time I glanced to the left it was all too late and the fire engine was there infront of me. Im usually pretty good with hearing sirens too so I really can't believe I didn't hear it (if they had the siren on!).

Amazingly, I was wearing what I considered to be the most unsafe of all my gear, an Alpinestars textile summer jacket (shoulder and elbow armour), Triumph textile trousers (knee and thigh armour), Daytona boots, Shoei Raid II lid. I was always worried that the Alpinestars was a little too thin to give me protection in an accident, but it did it's job well! Having a proper fitted lid made a difference.... my head must have taken a good battering on the side of the fire engine to get the red scrape and knock me out! - Ive never not had a graze before even from a much slower speed accident!!!

Hmm... maybe not this time!!!! The dealer does have two spanking new lower fairings for me waiting to be fitted!! hahah lol Don't think that will fix it, although the policeman said he has seen a bike in a much worse state than mine was in, but he reckoned because it was so new the insurance would probably just replace it rather than try to repair it!

Because I was out for a while then got ferried away in a brace I didn't get to see any of the damage to either my bike or the fire engine Sad

The only damage I can see is that my macbook air was in my topbox, in a protective sleeve and a rucksack but it still is bent in the middle with 4 dents along it... im using it now so it survived.. now with battle scars! hahaha - I'm amazed with all that around it it still got bent and dented - guess that explains why my body hurts so much!!! hahaah

LOL, true, but in a way, next to an ambulance, a fire engine must be the next best thing to be in an accident with, at least they are all trained paramedics and would know exactly what to do with me and it wasnt some idiot trying to pull my helmet off the wrong way when I was unconscious! - So perhaps they helped me a lot!! Ooh its all a wierd paradox.... I just hope another fire engine got to whatever emergency they were heading to in time to save whoever was in trouble!

Dont forget to put in the claim for all your bike kit, your macbook etc. By the sounds of it it wasnt your fault, so it shouldnt leave you out of pocket at all.
