Older films on BluRay...

If all goes to plan I'll be switching to BluRay on wednesday so will start buying films again rather than always downloading (of course I'll only buy stuff thats worth watching Wink)

Anyways, old films... most films seem to be on BluRay now but is it worth buying them on bluray??? I don't get how the quality can be improved so much if its old? Does the film not need to be filmed in HD or whatever to really show off Bluray over DVD?

I can imagine all latest films will be worth buying in Bluray, I just don't get/understand how old films will be worth paying extra for Bluray if they aren't filmed in HD or whatever...

p.s any "must own" blu ray titles?

Gonna pick up Batman Dark Knight Very Happy maybe Transformers? Any reccomendations...

Ronin and Heat are fantastic in BluRay if you have a good quality sound system.

BluRay disks seem to have more options on them but I just like watching the movie I've never really explored the "extra's" yet.

300 would be good in Bluray I suppose.

I have the box set of Band of Brothers in BluRay that I still have to watch Very Happy Thumbs Up

Ronin is one of my all time favourite films so it's now on the list!!

Have a semi-decent sound system, Sony receiver, sony satellite centre and rear and Mission fronts... nothing amazing but it does the trick for now until I get my own place.

You can download HD divX videos, which will be same resolution as BluRay.

Big file sizes though.

It was my first BluRay purchase Very Happy Thumbs Up

I need to get a good sound system set up, I've got nowt just now Sad . The wife just doesn't understand Rolling Eyes

Just the noise of the cars in that movie are fantastic. Heat is good for the bank shoot-out scene near the end Very Happy

35mm Film is much higher quality than HD video! So all films shot on 35mm film will benefit from being transferred to Bluray.

What happens, is that the original film will be brought out of storage and a transfer will be done in HD. After this transfer is done it will be cleaned up digitally to remove all the dirt and film scratches. The level to which this is done is dependent on how much the studio thinks it's worth spending and how much they will get back. In the case of real classic old films, they sometimes go back to the original camera negative if it's available and rebuild the film. There are some fantastic results becoming available now. The sound can also be remixed from the original recordings too. There are a lot of old films that will be remixed in 5.1/7.1

So, yes, it is definatly worth getting old films on Bluray, certainly the big studio features anyway... cheaper lower budget films may just end up having a 'quick and rough' transfer that in some cases may not be a lot better to what's available on the DVD!

You may be able to download DivX/XviD in a 1920x1080 resolution but the compression is massive compared to a Bluray. The quality, whilst being acceptable to a lot of people is still nowhere that of a Bluray!

Personally Ive found a lot of downloads also have really dodgy quality audio too! There are some that are done well, but nothing compares to getting a Bluray with the uncomressed 7.1 audio on!

Ok, so downloads are free and yes, for most people they are happy with the quailty but for a true HD experience, Bluray is the best you can get at home (at the moment!)

Rather than talking about what may be possible, maybe you should download some and try it out.

Gonna be better than normal res dvds, so could supplement your blu ray viewing, if nothing else.

Gladiator is quite a lot better on Blu Ray. Apparently LOTR is awesome as well.
No Saving Private Ryan yet though...grrrr.

I recently watched Ghostbusters on blu ray and the quality was crap. Very grainy.

Depends on how they have been 're-mastered'.
