Hi,

I'm currently on the BR tax code, when I really shouldn't be. Had a letter from HM Revenue and Customs saying that I am on tax code - 647L.

How would I go about getting it changed? And claiming back the money I have overpaid. I'm also going to University in 2 weeks, so I won't be working at all. I haven't even reached my tax free limit yet this financial year. Does this mean I could claim back more?

Thanks.

You find the address of the tax office that handles your details, and write them a short letter suggesting that you're not sure that you're in the right tax bracket, and would like the inland revenue to take a look.
That's all it takes, and they'll reimburse you at the end of the tax year, if you've been overcharged.

I was told that I could do it over the phone? And that they'd reimburse me into my next pay packet...?

Wasn't my experience of it, but I last did it a few years ago, so they may have changed the procedure a bit.
Either way, it sounds like you know as much about it as you need to: phone them up, and voice your concerns. That's all it should take.

Don't talk to the tax office at all, talk to the wages department of your employer.

If you have had a notice of coding through your employer should have too and should change your code automatically but don't take the chance cos if they have had you on a BR code for a while they are obviously fuckwits who don't know hoe to operate PAYE properly anyway. Mad

Ring them and ask if they have had a notice to change your code - it's called a P6. Be ready to send them a copy of the notice you have had, as even if they haven't had their form through they can ring the tax office and confirm your correct code. Insist that they do this. You should then get the tax back in your pay packet before you leave.

If you leave before they have sorted it and you don't work again before next April you may not be able to claim your tax back until then, so make sure you call them tomorrow.

this will take ages...

i had the same thing. some bastard had the same name and DOB as me, so they thought i was him...

after over a year i finally sorted out their fuck up and got my £486 tax rebate.

get an appointment at your local centre, as over the phone they fob you off and are shit.

I've been working at Center Parcs, so i'll head into the personnel Department on Wednesday before work (My last shift is on Friday!)

Hopefully they'll sort it, might be able to break even on my overdraft.
