I know ... WTF has the boy been up to now?!?! Laughing

Ok, so what do you do if you have a cheap full suspension mountain bike that has a functional rear shock, but essentially has no damping in the front forks* just springs - so very boingy over a series of bumps and bottoms out at the drop of a hat ...

Well if you are me - this!! Cool

I have tested it and it actually works surprisingly well!! ... the front end now actually feels better and has more noticeable adjustment than my mates ~£500 bike*!!

The big question now is will the carp (i.e. cheap) wheels take the punishment of a 'proper' off-road route???!!? Laughing ... I intend to find out sometime this week Cool





*yes, I know for full suspension bikes, £500 is still at the lower end.

I always imagined you to be like Bill Gates ..... ie: if he drops a tenner, then it costs him more to stop and pick the thing up.

So! why bother with spending time welding a cheap damper onto a cheap bike .... dive into your considerable wealth and buy a good ish mtb.
Get a decent one on ebay for £500 Rolling Eyes

I have no idea what Project Elisha is (and CBA to do a search to see if it is posted elsewhere) and NO ... I'd rather spend my time and money on my own projects!! Very Happy

Fair play for the improvisation but frankly i would rather gouge out my eyes than attempt any proper off road stuff on one of those 'MTB style' bikes.

At least the weight should give you a decent momentum down any hills i suppose. Would probably need a tractor to get it up there in the first place though!! Mr. Green

But surely doing it on a less than appropriate bike just makes for more of a challenge - sure I could rip round on a flawless £3k bike ... but where is the fun/achievement in that!!?!? Wink

Oh and yep, it prolly weighs lets say +9kg than a squllion pound one*?? ... but is that really that significant to the all-up weight with me on it ... hell I take +2kg of drinking water with me alone!! Wink

I havent done any serious pedalling for several years now and didn't have a "squillion pound" bike when i did. My bike cost about £450 new and i spent a bit more tweaking it.

My problem with these cheap bikes is that they are just crap for anything other than cycle paths and even that is chancing it.

When we used to do a lot of cycling one of our group kept turning up on a different cheap bike every trip out. The amount of time we wasted at the side of trail trying to fix the bloody things for him before he made the inevitable long walk back to the car park alone while we went on with our ride just completely soured me against endorsing anyone going out and buying one or even using one ever again!

Its about 80deg turn before it touches (and has to be pretty much on full compression to touch) ... you have the steering at 80deg at a speed/terrain where you have full compression, you are going down in a heap anyway!! Wink

I actually went out on it this AM .... compared to my other bike that has NO suspension, the front end is a peach downhill ... the weakpoint is now the rear shock ... but to be honest, if you are up on the peddles, it doesn't massively matter what the rear is up to ... as long as the front feels reasonably planted (which it does). The rear shock is fine until the going gets tough BTW like lots of tree roots and large high frequency bumps.

Got some pics I'll upload in a bit ... Smile .. took some vid when I was going down the proper downhill course too - but only mobile phone stuff ... I'll see how it came out - not expecting much so might not even be worth uploading! Confused

The place I wend is quite hard work and the crank has taken some punishment ... I need to tighten that up ... also the gears tended to miss a bit when under load and over bumps (good excuse to get off and walk it up!! Laughing) ... but apart from that its all good ... Thumbs Up
