What price range.

Daughter has just replaced hers under the house ins and got one of these
Fujitsu Amilo 15.6in Notebook Li 3710 V2 £349 Link

Nice widescreen and seems nice and fast.

Slow tends to mean that you have go too much stuff loading up. Unless its one with one of the Atom processers.

3 people I know had that dell inspiron and all of them where knackered in a month. I didnt bother going near them when I found so many where having to take them back.

My lap top before my nice new one here was an acer, god awful thing! it was an aspire (one with ugly grey keyboard and the texture of a kitchen counter) over heated all the time, had to buy cooling fan, was full within a few months of using it, done stupif aukward things with the mouse pad which caused typing to be impossible, needed fixed every day. had to get more than one charger with it as first one failed to work. battery lasts 20 mins off charge on power saver. CRAP! and very slow.

do not waste money on that.

I now have a HP compaq , I cant remember model but it has a massive memory, faster, webcam, widescreen, looks a dam sight nicer, not a bother with it. It was £400.

My dad has a Sony Viro (sp) its a good one but cost a fortune!

My dad's had two Dell inspirons in the last couple of years, and they've both had problems with their charging circuits.

They seem to be very weak around the jack plug in point, had the most recent one replaced under warranty (motherboard replaced).

But generally I would steer clear of Dell's.

I and my daughter both use Toshiba Satellite Pro's. Whilst they are a bit on the large side to be fashionable the have both proved to be very tough. Mine especially has had a very hard life, it was in my work bag strapped to my bike's rack when I went over that guy's bonnet last year and has been dragged around building sites and all sorts, dropped sevreral times, had loads stacked on top of it and it cheerfully marches on.

Not as strong as something like the old toughbooks but very good nonetheless and her was only just over £300 down Tottenham Court Rd last Christmastime.

they were the 2 laptops that recently packed up on me. my acer overheated so much that the plastic next to the mouse pad had melted down into a sort of dent.
the HP was fine but mines about 5 years old now and i think its just died of old age.

as for price range.. dont really want to be spending over about £400. and i dont really need to, im not after something fancy.

thanks for your help, and any ideas welcome Thumbs Up

Lenovo, HP and Toshiba are generally all good safe bets, I will add though that the HP 510/530/550 series have very fickle rubber trackpad buttons that like to get very unresponsive if you hammer away at them or let dust and debris get in them. I've heard bad mumblings about the very latest wave of Toshiba stuff too, although I suspect a lot of that is just bad grapes over the recent wave of layoffs with them.

I've personally not had any real issues with Dells and still happily refurbish 5/6 year old machines from them.

Sony Vaios are generally decent although the FS/FE series tended to have rather brittle screen ribbons.

Acer have come on in leaps and bounds since the Gemstone series with massive improvements in construction and reliability and I'd go as far as saying that the Aspire 6930G is one of the best bang per buck laptops you can buy, just be sure to turn of the broken virtual surround sound. The older Extensa chassis with the curved keyboard has repeatedly proven a little problematic for us though.

Advent tend to be outsourced chinese rubbish but they occasionally rebadge some absolute gems usually from German factories.

Hope that helps, if you've got any questions about a specific model, feel free to fire away.
