As the topic says, my power supply is makin an annoying noise. Its "chattering" like the fan is in contact with something. Its not loud but u can hear it clearly. Any idea what that might be?

Cheers.

How old is it and what's it's rated wattage? Most fans have bearings that will go over time. Once they do they will become noisy in some way. Having worked on computers for many years I can safely say that it isn't worth it to ever open up a PSU. You might die.

They start from about £12 normally, or maybe £20 at the most for what you need. This is often much more safe than investigating if a wire is caught (probably unlikely to be honest) or to try and replace the fan which is also most likely to not be of a standard size anyway and impossible to find.

Finally, are you sure it's the fan? Sometimes PSU's make a very high pitched electrical sound either because they are cheap or because they are on their way out.

Similar thing happened to me not so long back, hoovering out the dust fixed it for a while, but the rattle did come back fairly soon so bought a new power unit in the end.

Im not 100% its the fan but i know its coming from the PSU. When i give it a little knock on the top of the case it stops for a second and comes back and the switch is flickering if that helps.

The power light flickering on the back of the PSU is sometimes quite normal because that light is sometimes powered right off of AC.

If it stops after you hit it then it would suggest the fan.... but if it's annoying you then your only option really is to replace the PSU.

In order to try and supply a reliable and consistent DC voltage the PSU contains large capacitors inside. These hold a huge electrical charge even when no longer connected to any power source.

This is why if you ever turn off your computer, unplug it from the wall and THEN hit the power button you get a blip of power for about a quarter of a second until the PSU is drained of it's residual charge. Also, with PSU's that are going wrong, sometimes they won't power up a PC until you do what I just described, unplugging them and holding down the power button to drain them.

I might just buy a new one. Could you recommend me any good but not too expensive PSU's? This is my current one "HIPER hpu-4b580 Type R 580W modular ATX2.2 PSU, it says that its 580W but someone told me it was only 300. Cheers.

lol.

didnt know human eyes could recognise something switching on and off 60 times a second.

You really can Wink stare at any light on a plug extension strip with a built in surge protector and you can see the light flickering. Trust me.

Those are pretty good power supplies, I've sold a couple hundred of them before myself. They are more on the expensive side though. Saying that, if you have a hi-spec PC you're going to want something as reliable as possible.

95% of the time you'll be fine with a cheap branded 600W PSU though. Something like this maybe?

https://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/8284362/CiT-Silent-Technology-600UB-600W-PSU-Power-Supply-Unit/Product.html?&engine=froogle_pc&keyword=CiT+Silent+Technology+600UB+%2F+600W+%2F+PSU+%2F+Power+Supply+Unit&_$ja=tsid:11518|cc:|prd:8284362|cat:Components

300W PSU's are very cheap and plentiful but are only for basic spec PC's. You need to make sure you're supplying enough watts to your PC! Thumbs Up Wink
