 |
|
My dad had given me his car to sell for him (here) and he wants it gone asap as the tax is running out at the end of the month and he's switched his insurance to his new car. I'm going to get the car from Bristol and bring it up to me in Cambs, then stick it up for sale but I don't want to have to insure it as hopefully I'll not have it too long. I can drive it up here as my any car cover on my own policy allows me to drive an uninsured car but presumably I can't tax it on that basis...or can I?
The way I see it my only other option is to insure it and then use the certificate to tax it before cancelling. Would I get shafted for admin fees or something doing this?
*SPAM ALERT* Incidentally if anyone wants to buy the car, PM me ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR |

Are you sure you're allowed to drive an uninsured car? Any third party cover usually requires a policy to be running on the vehicle you are borrowing. I may be wrong but that is my experience.
If you truly do have cover then your certificate should allow you to tax the car.
Cheers

I know I can drive it back this month but then I've GOT to sell it by the end of the month as it'll be sat outside my house. I'd rather tax it; that way I can take my time selling it and can use it occasionally to keep it sweet too.
Do you reckon I could tax it if I rock up to the post office with a one day policy certificate? Seems a bit unlikely in a way as wouldn't all the uninsured drivers be doing it to tax their cars ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR |

As above, a vehicle parked in the road must be insured. There is no way around this.
Tommy, one option would be to take insurance, tax it then cancel the insurance within the 14 day cooling off period. However most insurers are wise to this and will delay the posting of docs.
One hurdle not yet mentioned, in order to insure a vehicle you must be the registered owner/keeper. Obviously there is leeway given to this for cars going through the purchase process.
Tommy, is selling the car from your address such a good idea? I certainly would think twice buying a car if the address I view at is different to that on the docs. If possible best to sell at your dads and his insurer will prob offer him temp additional car cover until sold. (if not free prob at a minimum cost) ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! "

Does you dad not still have his cover note?
Failing that you could always use photoshop it's worked for me every time (they dont check up on it,although i was always insured just waiting on the docs.)

Not been mentioned because it's not the case.
The above temporary insurance I got is specifically sold for people to use other people's vehicles. Further from that, I and many other people have done it plenty of times in other cases.
Similarly to the other myth of "two people can't have different insurance policies on the same vehicle". |
It is a mine field, however the registerd owner and keeper can be two different people, hence why you can get quotes of a temporary basis to drive someone elses car. In effect you become the keeper of the vehicle for that policies life. In most cases people insuring are the keeper, whereas the owner is most often the finace company/lease company etc.
As for the "two people can't have different insurance policies on the same vehicle", yes that is a myth to an extent. If both people have an insurable interest on the vehicle, then in the event of a claim the insurers would look to divide liability accordingly. For example if stolen, both insurers would pay out 50% of the agreed value.
Look at this thread to see the problems it can cause:
