Think I have a problem??

Heeyyy!!

I just bought my first bike last week, a 2004 Honda CBR125R

However I think there might be a problem with it

(This is in all possiblity a stupid question, it might not be a problem at all, it could just be me doing something stupid or simply being stupid, I don't know an awful lot about bikes yet so bear with me!! )

Now I'm afraid I'm only really used to cars (never had a car myself, I'm only 17, but I've driven a few times and have an interest in them )

Anyway, when starting the bike from cold, regardless of what I do with the choke lever (it's the pre-fuel injection model), the bike REFUSES to idle. Seeing as I'm used to starting cars, this seemed very odd to me. Obviously if this is normal and I'm being stupid then I apologise

Basically if I don't open the throttle at all, the revs just drop and the engine dies instantly. The engine won't idle until it is a little warm, and to do that I just have to hold the throttle open slightly for a while. Doesn't have to be much, just enough to keep it alive (say around 1500-2000rpm). Most importantly, I want to make sure the bike isn't being damaged in any way because of something I'm doing, or even something it's doing.

If there is something wrong, could someone please advise me how to solve this?? And as I said, if it is normal, then just tell me, at least then I know Need to learn somehow!

when you give it some choke it should rev higher,
open the choke halfway then start the bike adjust the choke so it runs at 2000 rpm without touching the throttle, don't ride it, let it warm up and slowly decrease the choke little by littel until the bike ticks over with no choke, then you can ride it

i got the same problem with my xr125 when i got it, had been off the road for 6 months so didnt want to run, just give it half choke and it should run, then when its warm turn the choke off, and if its really cold might need full choke

On my 125 there is an adjuster to change what speed (how many revs the engine idles at. It's possible that this has simply been set too low and your engine is only just about handling it once it has warmed up.

Once your engine DOES manage to idle while warm, how many revs is it at?

im no that mechanicly minded but it might just need the carb set up/adjusted

it's nothing to worry about, not many single cylinder bikes will idle properly with the choke on & it isn't going to cause any damage,

with all of my bikes I start on full choke then rev slightly while easing the choke off part way untill I find a point where it will tick over,

you'll get used to how it works after you've had it a while

Might just need the tickover adjusting.

What rev speed does it idle at when the engine is warmed up?

I find that my use of choke on my bike depends on the temperature outside....

On a cold day, full choke, no throttle.
On a hot day, no choke, tiniest bit of throttle.

Most of the time i open the choke about 70% of the way and give it a tiny bit of throttle just to get it to catch.


Easiest way to get the 125 to start until you get used to it, is full choke, and whilst cranking it, open the throttle until it starts. If it's warm outside, use less choke.

I think the tickover on my cbr125 when warm was about 1500~1600rpm.

Sorry for such a late reply!! Just been soooo busy

Anyway thanks for all your responses!!

Seeing as one of the most common things mentioned was the idle speed, I thought I should look into it. And funnily enough, when my bike was warm, it was idling at about 1100rpm, which definitely ain't right. I've since altered the idle speed to 1400rpm and started it from cold afterwards, and it is muuuuuch better! No more cutting out, problem solved!!
