my crisis of confidence with my bike? I took it out today to go to the gym (which is never the most sensible thing in the world as I'm pretty tired coming home) and I think I've discovered where my confidence is lacking.

Slow speed maneuvering! (is that word spelt right.. I can never tell)

I'm fine once the bike is going, but starting to move.. and slowly going round tight corners, that's when I worry. And don't ride very well. I'm not sure if this is a clutch thing (I had the hang of it on the NSR) or a 'more power on the throttle' thing - probably the latter.

So tonight with any luck if I've time I'm off to an empty car park to practice!

Any tips?

Yup. Use the rear brake to control your speed - slip the clutch at 10k if that feels good. Look where you're going - not at the floor in front of your wheel. Use your body to counter balance the bike - lean the wrong way so that the bike doesn't fall over.

Perhaps you're having a bit of a problem with the clutch because it's further out than your NSR?

If you have small hands It could be that you are controlling the clutch with the ends of your fingers and not having the same amount of control. It's easily sorted though.

The first thing I noticed from moving off my NSR is that I couldn't plod around in 1st gear anymore without the use of the clutch. Slow moving riding usually means I have the clutch pulled in a little while accelerating and using the rear brake when necessary. As others have said, if you find the biting point a bit awkward then you should be able to adjust it with a bolt thingy next at the clutch.(sorry for lack of ability to explain)

my biggest downfall whilst learning that one. Especially during u-turns!

I don't *think* it's the position of the clutch.. but I do have small hands so I'll pay attention to that and see if moving it would make it easier.

Thanks for the tips Smile

I've been questioning my slow speed ability too in recent weeks. However, I rode down to London and back today (work elated, but enjoyed the ride, although the bloody weather forecast never said anything about the blustery wind! Rolling Eyes )

As I came up to a roundabout there was a long (and I mean l-o-n-g) line of traffic backed up as a bus had broken down. I stayed in my lane or a minute or two, then just thought, naaahh, this isn'twhy I did my bike test. And slowing began filtering down the gap, right to the front and went on my merry way.

Must have saved myself a good five minutes of riding time and felt great afterwards for the filtering (first proper time really) and the fact that I got past all the cages and was still making progress home.

Just need that moment when it all 'clicks' and you'll be away.
