the long and the short of it is, they are a 4stroke 125...
its just gay to have a 130kg 125 4 stroke that is trying to look like a race bike but goes like a granny,
you'd be better off with a cg125 (which is 15kg lighter and has the same power) that atleast does what it says on the box..

if you buy a yzf r125 then you too and doomed to be bent as Julian Clary, and will probably want to touch young boys in inappropriate places as well

It's a good starting point for youngsters.

Fast it isn't, but it's reliable, looks good (well much better than a CBR125) and will probably get Yamaha many more sales of the R6 when the rider gets old enough. Thumbs Up

Passed my CBT last year and bought one new.

Loved every minute of it. I bought it for the looks as what else is there to look for in a 4T 125??
Also i'm 27yr 6ft2 and 13st and didnt want to look like a giraffe riding an ant!

Really though, if your thinking of upgrading to a sports bike in the future then start on a sports 125. Sharp steering, disk brakes and the ridin postion etc.
They do exactly what they're ment to do. Get you used to the riding style of a sports bike.

I had 80ish out of mine down some A roads and was always overtakin cars.

The CG i rode back from the DAS school was SHITE. If that was my first bike it would of put me off riding bikes! No joke!

Also as i paid 3K and sold it for not far off i was able to sell it and get a nice 600 gixxer even though i was made redundant.
If i'd bought i cheaper bike i couldnt of done that.

Cheers.

PS- learning the mod1 manovers on it made doing it on the DAS CB400 a doddle.

When you can get them for under £1k, then, as with the CBR125, I reckon they'll be an ok buy.
Until that, you're paying a hell of a lot of money for the looks (and sound, if you like that). I enjoy bikes for riding and wouldn't pay £2k extra just so I would believe others will think I'm on a pretty bike (I generally laugh at people on them myself - always thought they looked pretty silly personally.)
Performance in most aspects, from what I've seen, still isn't up to the 2 strokes. Also, I'd say they look smaller than the NSR, at least.

Then there's the amount of money you're chucking away in deprecation.
So, to conclude, at the moment... for rich tarts.
When this thread is brought up in a few years time... a reasonable learner bike if you can get one cheap.

That is probably the case with this years bike. Last year however They were £2999 so they are selling 2nd hand this year for £2500-£2600.

£400-£500 loss for 6000 miles in a year (in my case) isnt bad.

Also just because you have something new dosent mean your a tart or rich. If it was a bigger cc than a 125 and you bought it new it wouldnt make you a tart or rich.

I wanted a hassle free new sports 125 4t that was the same size as a 600. I also wanted to sell it a year later and get a 600 without spending any more money.

Maybe if i could of bought one last year second hand i would of but at the time i wanted one and had the money they were only just comming out.

Fitted the bill perfectly. In my case.

Cheers

Ok, rich or a fool Wink.
New bike prices went up exceptionally this year, thus keeping nearly-new prices up too. Can't see that likely to happen again soon.
Regardless, that means that had you bought a CBR125 for £1k, it's likely you wouldn't have lost any money. Further more, your insurance would be likely significantly cheaper - leaving you with a decent chunk more money to spend on a 600.

People that buy new on any bikes (bigger included) where there's second hand bikes that do the same thing fall into the tart/rich/fool category.
I bought a new bike last year because I could not find a bike that did the same thing (690 enduro - TE610 was the only similar one available second hand and only one I found got written off two days before I called up) and even so, in hindsight I'd still say I was a fool. And this is including the fact that to buy the same model new now costs £1k more I think, so second hand value probably hasn't gone down as much as it could have.

Fair enough on the "rich/fool" theory.

In my case i had to buy new because the Yam is the bike i wanted. The CBR is a lot smaller (see my Giraffe-ant comment) and is basically in my opinion a "sporty" CG with a full fairing.

If i was going to buy a CBR 125 then for sure i would of got a second hand one.

If this year i was going to buy a YZF R-125 i would buy a second hand "08".

So yeah, No "tartyness" in my decision last year.

To the OP i think they are a fine bike to start on if you are heading down the sportsbike route like me. No sore neck and back while you get used to the position etc.

I wouldnt buy a new one, around £3500 i think but get a nice 2nd hand one for £2500 or wait till next year and see whats about.
I was told the glasses guide is £1950 for an "08" with 4k.

Sure a 2T is quicker (both will feel slow after a month or so anyway) but i couldnt live with the noise and any age Aprillia rs125 is a tarts bike Wink

cheers

Ahem. Wink

So far I'd say my favourite amount of power on the road is around 30-40hp. Haven't ridden a bike (or driven a car) that feels 'fast' to me in a very long time, but that sort of power I find is just about adequate for general road use and ideal for back-lane fun.

You could probably say the same about the YBR and YZFR

I thought the YBR was just a CG, while the YZF was a CG failing to look like an R1 Smile.

That's what I meant.

The YZF is just a YBR in disguise.

And the YBR pretty much equals the CG but I choose to compare the YZF to the YBR as it's from the same manufacturer.

We are both right.

So grabbing a brand new ZX10R for 7395 in sep 08 when even now they are going retail for a second hand 08 plate for 6995 isnt a bargain. Sometimes there are good deals out there even on new bikes.

Under £40 a month depreciation isn't too bad. However, a quick look on biketrader shows trade sellers a fair bit cheaper - nearer £140 a month depreciation doesn't sound so great to me. Private sale should be even cheaper.

As I said, this year was an exceptional year for the rise in bike prices; it's likely to level out over time and isn't a good indicator of general value... it did make me feel slightly better to see the new bike I bought being sold for significantly more for an unchanged model.

I'm sure sometimes they are some 'good deals' - but I'd still say it's very rare and generally only worth it if you really can't get similar second hand.

Very nice looking bike, but it's a 125 at the end of the day. Plus, why buy a brand new bike to learn on? My mate learnt the hard way - not saying you're a shit driver like him, but still, if you come off it you'd be crying.

Well, if what you said in your other thread about your TS50 is true then it's just as fast as the YZF so why bother Laughing
