okay, I've got 3 little gold fish. I've had them since the manager wanted rid of them at work.
I've re-tanked them into a 25L tank which is currently on the side in the kitchen with its own filter pump and fake plants. It looks nice.

Roxanne (my OH), Her Dad has offered me his old fish tank as He's got a new one now.

It's a big tank, Around 2ft square, And had all the pumps, Filters and heating gear to make it a tropical tank.
But I am quite attached to my little gold fish!

The house isnt really big enough to keep both tanks. This new tank will stand in the living room nicely. But I dont want the other tank in the kitchen any more. It's too heavy for the kitchen side as it is.

So, How exciting can a Cold water tank of this size get?

Can I put any decent fish in there? Or am I stuck with my 2 golf fish and the strange little black fish with big goggly eyes that my manager bought for a laugh?

Cheers

Piranha Twisted Evil

My mate had a tank full of red belly's, they were pretty cool especially when it came to feeding time. He has also had blue fresh water lobster, an Oscar, Guppies, Betta, Pleco and more.

I'm no expert but there is a huge variety of fish available for fresh water tanks.

Carp will outgrow a tank in no time but Tench are such slow growing fish.

In a 10'x17' garden pond my parents Ghost and Mirror Carp have grown from a few inches to a few pounds in weight in a matter of years whereas the same size Green Tench is tiny (12" maybe) in comparison and not that much bigger than the 20 odd year goldfish in there.

The only fish that I've seen grow quick are Gold Orfe. Lovely looking fish but can be skittish and jump during thunder and lightning.

If the tank is 2' square then your probably going to be looking at about 65l of water which should comfortably house just three goldfish and some decorations ( 20 litres per adult goldfish is the ideal minimum I think ). I certainly wouldn't leave them in the 25l tank as they will outgrow it pretty quickly.

The bigger tank spruced up with something for them to swim through and some real plants and grass would look fantastic. I have a similar setup and tried to go for as natural look as possible and my fish are thriving.

Still time to grow though as I'm pretty sure they can live to 20 or so.

Dont fish only grow to a certain size depending on the size of the tank?

Anyway, I've got the aquarium set up with my 3 fish in it.
Unfortunately the lights dont work. I went to Pets at home, Spent £30 on new tube lights and starters. And it still doesnt work.

Pulled the hood apart, And all the wiring inside is corroded to shit. There is like a box with coils in it, No idea what it is. But its red rusty.

So the plan is to gut it all out, Buy another cheap hood, and use the electrics out of it for my lights.
Failing that, I've seen light starter kits that are loose fitted. I was just going to put all the wiring from one of these kits into my light hood.

Gold fish are in the tank, Current temperature is 23 degrees. My tropical fish book says the tank needs to be 24 - 25 degrees for tropical fish. Roxannes Dad's tank is at around 28 degrees I think.

I've spoke to some people, and they have said if I raise the temp of the tank very slowley. Over a couple of weeks. And get it up to the required 25 degrees ~, The Gold fish will be okay in there. And I can add some tropical fish! Smile

Not sure how they will get along with the Gold Fish. I guess we'll see what happens.

Look up the term "stunted growth". They'll grow to the size of the tank because they can't grow any bigger but their internal organs will be too big for their body and they can become deformed. Not nice.

Also, your goldfish may be ok at higher temps but it will speed up their metabolism and shorten their lifespan. Also not nice.

Post what you plan to do on a proper fish forum and you will have a similar reception to that given to the bloke with the maxi scooter and 60k miles under his belt Wink

I am guessing you are matey with the Maxi Scooter then, Seeing as this is your first post with the user name ulster exile.

So its not good for the Gold fish having them in 25 degree water then?
To be honest they have been in water around that temp since we first got them.
Manager at work bought them, Stuck them in a SHITTY little 10 litre tank, and stuffed it on top of the hot drinks machine. Laughing

I brought them home, Put them in a 30L tank, and the water has always been room temperature or warmer. Never been cold from the tap. I've always added a bit of warm because the one time I did put them in cold water, They acted like they were dead.

Anyway, Still unsure what to do. I might just whip the gold fish out and stick them back in the old tank and let my sister have them.

Or I might set up a chilli dippers (cold water fish) aquarium. As long as I can get some half decent fish in there. Stuff which will eat the algi off the tank etc?

Shit no! Funniest thread I've ever read. This place is a bit too mercenary for me to post my bike related problems here. Laughing

Anyway, long term the heat won't be good for their health. TBH I'd get rid of the goldfish altogether. They are seriously dirty fish and most people reckon 10gallon per fish plus a very good filter minimum as a result. Get tropicals, you've much more options for stocking (can't think of any algae eaters which prefer cooler temps). Stock slowly though

My trop tank is run at 24 degrees since some of my corys prefer the cooler water, but even that's too warm (imo) for coldwater fish.

Sounds like you have been constantly improving the quality of the fishes life all the time you've had them Karma Thumbs Up

Looks like a nice set up already just add a backing picture in there and some more plant life and it will look cool.

While they are that small you could always add a couple of coldwater plec's but either another tank and splitting them or going for a bigger tank when they start to grow will be necessary.

Dont do full water changes either just say 20% a week that way you can keep all the good bacteria in the water.

Oh right, Nice one. Sorry, Just seemed like you'd made a separate account to post.

I might slap the goldies back in the old tank then and give them to my Sister.

Cheers for the help. Smile

Yea, I think its a bit big to be doing complete water changes too. Takes fucking ages to fill! Laughing

As for the Gold fish. It's a funny story really.
They are about a year old now. Our last manager at work picked up a shitty little tank. It was outside a charity shop and he saw it on the way back from doing the banking.

At first he had the 2 gold fish in there, It was stuffed on top of the coffee machine, And I was the only one who cleaned them out.

I had a day off, and when I came back, There was a third fish in there. A Black thing.

Rob (the manager) left, And Jamie (new manager) started. And wanted rid of them.
One of the lads I work with decided to pour them into the toilet! Shocked

So I went off my head at him. Made him fish them back out and back into the tank. I put a few inch of water in it, And drove home with the tank in my car.

At home, Then went in a pint glass while I cleaned the tank, Re-filled, And put the fish back in it. They were acting dead for about 3 days!

Then I went out and got the 30L tank and filter/pump from Pets at home. It was only about £30, came with the water conditioner and "good Bacteria" additives. And they have been fine since. Smile
I just fancied expanding my fish collection.

Somebody saw it the other day, Cant remember who. And they were quite shocked that the Black fish was getting on okay with the Gold Fish. Apparently they dont mix well? Confused

+1

It's called a Black moor. Never had coldies but I gather that due to its shape the black moor doesn't do well at feeding times with boisterous tank mates (which the goldies would be afaik).

Ever thought of having an outside pond? Razz
