I'm thinking of buying a new moped brand new of the shelf, how many years/months do I get before I have to take it for MOT?

Thanks

Lifan
Sym
Superbyke
Hyosung
Cant think of any more, they all have weird names.

Look, just buy a Speedfight or Aerox, something made by a real brand.

Dont forget the old favourite, Yamasaki.

If you do buy Chinese, I wouldn't worry about MOT's, it wont last that long.

Anything that sounds like its Chinese, it will be cheaper to buy so a new one will cost about the same as a used non-Chinese one. You get a lot more bike for your money with a non-Chinese one, this means although you might need to MOT it, it will actually pass whereas a Chinese one is not only more likely to go wrong but also harder to find parts for.

Decent, or reasonably so, include Gilera, Aprilia, Peugeot, Yamaha, Suzuki, Cagiva, Derbi, Piaggio, Italjet, Sachs, Vespa and KTM, Kawasaki (if they make one?)

It will be easy to give you names to buy,

Chinese bikes are of very poor quality and will fall to bits. Basically anything brand new and under a Grand don't buy.

Stick to,

Honda
Suzuki
Yamaha
Kawasaki
Paiggio
Vespa
Gilera
Peugeot

I'm sure there are a few more but those are off the top of my head.

Soeul nearly ended up as a Chinese province about 1950, but it was not to be, so for the time being Hyosung are Korean.

hi,
you can buy a brand new chinese scooter for less than most 2nd hand scoots from the big named manufacturers,
if you do buy chinese, think of it as disposable as if it does last the 3 years to mot time, it will most likely fail & be uneconomical to repair. (thats if you can find parts or someone to actually work on it.)
one thing about chinese scoots, regardless of the badge on it, there all pretty much the same bikes, so parts are interchangeable.
having owned various chinese bikes, i wouldnt dismiss them out of hand.
though if you do buy one, forget selling it later on, as there pretty much worthless 2nd hand.
if maintained properly, they can be reliable, it just takes a bit more time & effort.
if your the type who doesnt like doing their own maintenance, probably better steering clear of the chinese ones.
whereas a scoot from from one of the so called reputable makers will usually have a re-sale value.
cheers,
GAZ
