Light painting anyone had a go?

I've always seen light painting done time to time on the web but never had a go so thinking it's easy and a bit of childish fun decided to give it a crack!!

here is what came out from lots of swinging about with torches and a laser pen..Nowt great but was a steep learning curve. I'll add some with loads of sparks later today..done by setting fire to some steel wool and spinning it over head.....dodgy but great effect

cheers Hetzer.....70 views and your the only one to make a comment! I was hoping others might make suggestions or comments on what they would like to see etc...or even post up a few attempts as I'm sure a few on here have had a go at this kinda thing!

anyhow for the more pyromaniac types here is tonight's spark fest. a bit of wire wool on a string a quick squirt of WD40 light and prey you don't get hurt Shocked

Yes Digital Cam as you can see what it looks like straight away! No editing after these are straight as they were taken. Bulb setting for long exposure and a remote Wink

The windmill shot without the light-painting would have been really nice- still nice though, don't get me wrong.

I haven't really tried much in the way of light painting as I'd lose all reference points etc Laughing

If I didn't get it perfect it'd be pissed and just give up.

Only thing with digital cameras is though you get a lot of noise with long exposures, getting better all the time, but there's usually still some noise. Yours don't look that bad actually, what camera are you using just our of interest?

You've inspired me to give it a go. I have some Portra 160NC & 400NC kicking around so might just think up some ideas and do that. Thumbs Up

There was some awesome examples some photographer had done, I mean, they were mind-blowingly good! I'll see if I can find them.. they'd be an inspiration for sure.

Cheers guys the alien type shot seems to get the most comments so maybe I'll have to work at doing some more along those lines..it's all trial and error

KeV6 I just posted this up which is the windmill without the light painting as I took a test shot..slight star trails too....see if it's what you thought it would look like!!

The cam I'm using is a Canon 40D about 400 iso usually and the noise is not an issue with this type of shot however I do turn on the noise reduction (where it takes a same length exposure and removes hot pixels) if say I'm doing an hour long single shot for star trails etc..but on the whole even at 800 iso it's not bad........And that's some interesting film you have there!!! I had to google it Wink

.. Maybe a little more time for longer trails but I don't know if that was possible with the amount of light on the windmill (unless you used a ND grad upside down or something) Thinking

Your right KeV6 not long enough to call it a proper star trail but any longer and the windmill starts to burn out. If you have a DSLR then the easy way I do it if you have too much light polution is to take say 120 30 second exposures and get a program to stack them for you (it's free by the way). if you have a look in my photostream you'll see what I mean!!! at least having the program to do it for you means you only have to up load them and click go!!! Very Happy

Also done with marco due to the narrow DOF, shifting the focus little bits at a time and stacking them to get more of the subject in focus.

I like to try get what I'm after in one exposure and 'at' exposure, although, all photographs can benefit from a little post processing.

Think someone's nicked my film; I only have cheapo Kodak 200.. poor show.

Right I'll try and zap one of my bikes or the car !!! Got a load of light sticks and flashing led's etc arrived this evening so will go out to a few locations tomorrow night and see what happens!!! It's all a bit of fun at the end of the day

And KeV6 your the same as me then try and get the pic right at the time of taking it rather than photoshop it good after. Great program and I love the different things you can do with digital editing but for me the get the picture right first time is the best way to develop your skills Thumbs Up

I did a workshop with the Royal photographic society earlier in the year where I submitted a portfolio of 20 shots which were judged good enough for an LRPS..me I think I got lots of practice before I get good at this!!
