Hi all. The airbox on my Bandit melted due to an excess of petrol being spat into it over a long period of time (read: before I bought it). I had to temporarily replace it with a set of pod filters. Now - I've been checking the plugs religiously, because I don't like the idea of killing an engine with a lean mixture.

However, it's been largely fine: the plugs are coming up an OK colour, and although the flatspots have returned in some force, they're only between about 4.7K to about 6.5K - I'm led to believe that this is around the rev range where the needles are used to determine fuel flow. My problem is that I can't adjust the needle position, because they have no notches: they just sit at the height that's set as standard.
Is i possible to buy some adjustable needles for these carbs? They're CVK32s. Failing that, can anyone suggest a good material to fashion some shims from? I had thought of using some steel, but since the needles are made from brass, I didn't want to knacker them too quickly if I could avoid it...

I consider buying a dynojet kit as a bit of a last resort, because money's bit on the tight side at the moment. If it's the only way, then it's the only way, but I'd rather be spending money on decent brake lines first, if I can.

That's the conclusion I was coming to.
My only problem with this is that it was a complete sod to remove the previous airbox: I can't get the bloody carbs off the inlet rubbers - they've seized. If there's an easy, non-destructive way of solving this, then I've got no problems at all...

Hi

Use some small washers under the tops of the needles to lift them up a touch.

All the best

Keith

Cool - I've give that a crack before lashing cash on the airbox, then.
How much should I raise them? 1mm or so?

It'd be awesome if this sorts it: I'm hoping (as I said) to sort out the brakes next, so if I could kill off two concerns in one shot, that'd be grand.

Hi

Try that as an initial amount. Maybe try a touch more. One notch on the dynojet needles appears to be a touch over 1mm.

All the best

Keith

Heat the inlet rubbers with a hairdryer, that should get the carbies moving. Or are the Clips seized?

Everytime I've fitted pods, I've had to go up a few jet sizes to get it the bike to run properly.

If you are running say 95 (i guess your in that ballpark) try 102.5

RS catalog, Screwfix, Maplins etc should sell suitable washers. Or go down B&Q and get some M3 washers, just check the thickness as they arent terrible accurate.

Still, I reckon the mainjet will need to go up a few sizes as even if you get the midrange working, it will be lean up top no matter what else you change.
