"Underground, Overground, Wombling Free, the Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.
Making good use of the things that we find, things that the everyday folks leave behind."
I am a terrible Womble!! ... the amount if times I have gone down the dump and seemingly come back with more junk than I took!!
Are you a Womble??
What was your best Womble to date?!?!
Please note that Wombling is only making use of stuff other people didn't want, NOT being a thieving pikey b4stard and nicking stuff people DID want!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |

ACTUALLY, I've just thought of a brilliant piece of Wombling that mr hellkat did a while back.
I'm sure I posted it here (or was it on Bikersweb?) : his wall of shiny square bits of metal.
They were samples of some sort of wall backing: there were loads of folders of them, being thrown out in a skip across the road from his flat, so Andy went and got them, and diligently took each one out and sorted them into piles, and then glued them on his wall.
(don't mind Barry, he's just arseing about with some spare ones)
Two days later he went past again, and there were loads of small plastic tiles, all different colours ... which he then used to tile his kitchen floor. They were well nice, I still have a few somewhere, but not enough to do much with ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Perfect example of Wombling!!!!
Skips are a great source of goodies for a Womble ... and yes I know it is embarrassing admitting I sometimes have a rummage around skips!! .... I've had a few gems from skips where businesses are closing down ... from computer components to florescent jackets with 'security' on them!! ... I even got one of those bottle camp stove thingys from one!!
here like this:-

I had a bottle at home from another womble ... it all works!!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity.

When I was at college in 1999, I noticed they chucked out a load of PC cases in their car park (like 40 or 50). So, after asking, I helped myself to 10 and cobbled together a Frankenstein computer with the working parts from them that my sister happily used for a few years. ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |

I was at my mums when they were getting ready to build 3 new houses next door to her (on a plot which had 1 house previously! ). I watched them chop down 3 trees and cut them into small logs. they then stood staring at the logs, then the full skip, then the logs and proceded to scratch their heads. I popped my head over the fence and said "I've got a big van here, I'll get rid of the logs for you if you wanna load them up!". So they put the logs in the back of the van (I had the van as I was picking up an old sofa my mum didn't want anymore!) and I took them home and put them in the woodshed. Once they were seasoned (dry) they kept my house warm all winter! They cost me nothing and came pre-chopped! 'twas awesome! ____________________ 1977 Honda CG125

Behold my new bicycle of awesomeness.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=67948
1976 Raleigh competition frame made of reynolds steel tubing found flung in a bush three months ago minus its wheels (police informed we had it, were not really interested but we held onto for three months in case anyone got in touch).
Front wheel, pedals and headset off an old raleigh "team bananna" found in a skip.
Rear wheel off girlfriends old bike which had a worn out gearset.
A new bottom bracket, set of tyres and a spin-on freewheel later (about £40 all-in) and I have a single speed roadster bicycle on which I was merrily pootling about this weekend. Comfiest and easiest to get about on bicycle I've ever owned. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

It's a shame no-one has invented the fridge or the six-pack! (tongue very in cheek!)
To be fair, I drink a lot of real ales that are not available by the case. I've always fancied putting in a bar in so I can buy the beers by the barrel ____________________ 1977 Honda CG125

Yep, dumps charge you if you want to take junk away - I've done that before ... i.e. dumped stuff of potential value that I'd have actually liked to use as bartering/bargaining chips towards junk I DID want over dumping it. However, they keep it and then charge me for the stuff I want ... .. so its not TRUE Wombleing as it isn't free ... but as far as this thread is concerned anything purchased for a nominal fee from a dump we will call Wambling!!
I suppose we could always stand outside the dump all day checking the people that come in and Wombling from them whilst they are in the queue!!
I have actually done that before - not down the dump, but I was cycling along and saw someone loading their trailer up - presumably for a dump run ... I spied something of interest in there (a lawn mower) and asked them if I could have it ... they were pleased as they had more room for other junk in their trailer and I was pleased as it was a freebee/true Womble!!!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity.

I've Wombled old Streetlights when the contractors take the old ones away.
Ask them if you can have it if you bung them a tenner and you've got a decent outside light. |
