Im thinking of getting a New iPod Nano. Well, more trying to justify it Razz

Was thinking the camera could be used to record rides, 16Gb Memory and loads of battery, VGA Res at 30fps should be pretty smooth. Also currently my iPhone means i cant change track etc without taking my Gloves off, so its a definite no, i reckon i could use the click wheel with gloves on, atleast the button based controls.

It would need to be mounted onto the Handlebars, as i have no screen. Kind of thinking something similar to those cheapy Phone mounts, perhaps something a little more substantial, but cant be too much either.

Pretty demanding eh? Razz Well if anyone knows of mounts etc, linkage would be great, and comments on how crazy i am is welcome.

As soon as I saw the new iPod nanos' I knew that I would love one for this purpose. Although to be honest, I don't really need one... as it is at the moment, I use my phone a sony erricson C905, which is an 8MP camera. It only captures video at a resolution of 384 * 288 though, which is less than the iPod nano. One advantage it has though is that it has removable flash memory, at the moment an 8GB Sony M2 card. Hmm, actually saying that removable battery as well so that I could charge several batteries too. I think I could get about 3 - 4 continuous video recording out of it limited by the battery not the memory.

I've used my phone to record several motorbike trips so far from my handle bars and it's worked really well except.... I had to tape it to my handle bar / mirror with a lot of tape in a really messy way which looks really stupid. Hmmm, I don't want to but I'll link to my attempt of taping my mobile phone to my handle bars but I warn you, it's pretty boring Razz

Oh and also this is just before I got my bike fixed the last time, so it sounded a bit like a lawn mower.

Gonna have a play with an iPod Nano before i make any decisions.

Genius means i dont have to make playlists Razz And im not always in the mood for certain songs.

Just want an actual dock. Also rode with headphones in, and i got a lot of road noise, bumping, and it hurt my ears a little, think its my headphones.

The type of bike you have, (Twin, IL4 - Faired, Naked) will have a big effect on how much you can hear. For instance, when riding my gsxr400 I could easily hear my music. But on a big (ish) twin like my SV, I could not hear a thing.

Hope this helps a little bit?

Well, its a naked 50, and i was using In Ear headphones with a foam seal (GX200's) It was literally the headphones on the helmet when going over bumps etc.

Early reviews say the microphone distorts very easily, can't imagine the recordings would sound very good.

I'm not up on the latest ipods, but you can't use the scrollwheel on my old Nano with gloves on.

Apparently it's because you need a bit of electrical conductivity to make the wheel work, and gloves insulate you too much. Hence why you can actually buy special 'ipod gloves'.

Pressy buttons should be okay though, if probably a bit fiddly.

yeah i'd only want to press the forward back, play pause buttons, once i've got a good volume i dont need to change it too often.

As an update, im trying to get the New Nano as a friend has one, and its beautiful! Just everywhere is out of stock :/

Think im gonna need a protecter kinda screen thing, as wind noise would be awful.

Right, ordered an Orange 16Gb off Apple Store, good for 16 Hours of Recording according to apple, but only has 4 hours of battery time when viewing video's (so i doubt it will be more when recording) but there are external batteries available.

As for the mount.

1. Between the Handlebars and the yoke, should mount nicely and obstruct anything, fairly simply mounting idea, a box with the top missing, some foam to grip around it, and a gap for the headphone connector. Perhaps some Plastic over the top with the wheel cutout for rain protection.

2. Between the 2 forks, below the headlight. Rubber straps around the forks, and the iPod in a case. Clear acrylic bent into a U Shape, foam stuck to the bottom and sides to hold and cushion, wood to provide the 2 ends, and some sort of lid i suppose. Click wheel would need to be accessible again. The Acrylic would stop anything getting to and damaging the iPod, and will protect it from windblast, hopefully just getting some lovely 2 Stroke noise B)

Not going on any big rides soon, so got about 15 days atleast to get these sorted out, just getting it perfect will be the hard part, i have the tools at school to be able to make the rest i think.

Probably sketch up a few diagrams of what i mean, as i doubt its obvious from what i have written.

Hoping to get some fairly good results, atleast on par with that tiny £65 Camera, and ofcourse its an iPod Razz

Just a thought:

You could buy an extra USB charging cable for it and then connect the +5v and -5v wires of the cable to the battery using the appropriate resistors / capacitors (or what ever, I'm not the best with electronics) in between. This way the bike will be able to provide power to it so you really will be able to get 16 hours of video for insanely long rides.

I'm tempted to attempt the above with my phone that can also be charged using a USB cable which I also use for recording journeys as mentioned in my previous post.

i would have suggested a garmin zumo 500 or 550 with some skull candy noise cancelling earphones, but on a ped that would be abit extreme.

i met a guy who had an ipod touch mounted on his bike, he made a metal plate, stuck one of them docking station bits on the bottom and had a metal plate covering the bottom and front holding the docking station bit in with glue. then he had 2 spring clips rivited onto the top of the plate, then the whole thing was mounted onto the handlebars and then sprayed black.

it was great, the ipod didnt move atall. come to think of it he should have made a few and sold them.

Neither of those devices have camera's, and thats what i've mainly bought it for, the music is just something more controllable than my iPhone.
