Firstly, hi everyone this is my first post on the forums.. Sorry it's nothing useful, but I will be lurking and actively taking part in the forums in the future.

I have done abit of research into peoples thoughts into this bike, and having already bought it (on finance, I know i'm a tit Razz), and pre-juiced as I got onto it, I can't go back now. So far, I can't find the reason of hate...

Sooo I would really like to ask you guys of the forum why there is quite abit of hate with this bike?? It's an R6 lookie like Razz (which is my main reason I bought it, due to it's looks, and the sporty feel which will better me when I do finally jump onto a bigger motorbike). YES I AGREEEEE, it's damn expensive, it doesn't match in speed and power of a 2 stroke considering the large sum of ££$$ you need to fork out for a 125, but if you got the money... why not Very Happy.

But for a 4 stroke, I find this bike pretty damn fine once you get over the price.. I'm a [L] << (horrible things, but I'm happy showing people around me, that I am prone to mistakes, whether they'll be big or small)

Is there a certain crowd people aim their flamethrowers at(not just the owners of the YZF 125??), or is it mainly everyone with a YZF 125 who gets hit with the heat from most people?

Just to let the 2 strokers know, I aint going against your beliefs as it's like a religion (which you will see in small statement below).. So my views will be different to yours, you like your speed/power, whereas I like my reliability (work/general commuting but still keeping the sporty factor)

I would like to think of myself as a sensible rider since I got this bike, as I've had my fun ragging the shit out of my YBR (which still goes strong, but it's slow I admit haha, but do that with a 2 stroke and it's more like a trip to the scrap yard or costly regular repairs which in the long run equals the amount for the YZF R125 and more) and decided to take things serious. I've chose to take a few years gaining experience (while I pay it off) on a bike that not only looks the part, but to me feels really nice and easy (being 6ft1).

This isn't intended as a flame or adding fuel to the fire, I would just like to know the "real" reason behind the hate for this bike =/

P.S. If you overlook my real question and jump straight to the 2 stroke bit.. atleast answer the question of the thread pleaase Very Happy and if possible add some good points about this bike haha, the poll questions are from what most people have flamed/argued with.. I would like to class myself out of the catagories as my real reason, is explained in italics Razz Also I would be argueing with myself heh Laughing Laughing Laughing

Thanks Thumbs Up

It is a 125 that costs 3k, you can get a decent 600 for that. Why buy a bike that is slow as arse? You are probably going to drop it anyway. Too me a R125 is like a 1.4 escort with a costworth badge and body kit. It's lying to itself.

I wouldn't flame the bike for what it is, I won't flame the owner for making such a purchase, where valid, I'll just offer my opinion that I wouldn't spend that much on a 125. A £350 CG125 for me is fine for 125 duties.

The problem is, you have brough a 3k starter bike....you have tied yourself into finance, so your stuck with it for 2/3 years.

If you drop it (as a learner this is likely) it's going to be expensive!

You could have bought a cheap old 125, rode that for a few months, then with the £2,500 you have left, you can do your full test, and then buy a proper R6!

This is the reason for the hate mostly.

Add to the fact, everyone that buys one comes on here starting arguments Laughing

Where is the all of the above option besides the last one.

Overpriced
Over rated
It is the one all the rich chavs will get. Admittadly, on looks it's not too bad but for some people (us) that know what the r6 etc actually is, we just think it is a copy cat bike but shit...

I hate it because it is symptomatic of the way people in Britain think these days.

To try to put that into one sentence...

Most buyers seem to be getting into debt to buy a luxury they can't afford because it looks nice even though it's got no real substance and of course they always seem to insist on getting a new one so they have a new number plate for a few months.

One keeps parking in a stupid way at work, blocking 3 bike spaces.

I've already picked it up and moved it twice (nice and light), next time it's going on it's side, (unless I discover the owner is a big fucker).

I don't hate the bike - I just think it is pointless. It hardly even has the legs on a geared fizzy. But if people want to spend their money on it, then its up to them I guess. I guarantee though, that I have had more fun with a £700 Gsxr, and a £2000 SV650.

And as for the "if you've got the money why not?" Didn't you get it on finance? Twisted Evil

I bought a 4 stroke 125 as my first bike - I had done all my research when I was 16, decided I wanted reliable, blah, blah.
Later, I got a 2 stroke and realised I had wasted my money on the 4 stroke. The 2 stroke was perfectly reliable - as they are, faster, more fun and a more sensible road bike.
However, further more, with hindsight, I realised spending a lot of money on 125s was a fools game. I'm happy to pass this experience on and from what I've seen, maybe 20% do actually learn from it, with the other 80% generally admitting that they wish they had learned from it, after making the same mistakes as me Smile.

The price - if you've got three grand to spend, I can guarentee that (well 99% of people anyway) you will be happier spending a chunk on passing your full licence, then buying a restricted bigger bike.
You'll also save money in the long run.

2 strokes thrive on being ragged - don't and they tend to clog up. You do need to do maintenance at the prescribed intervals - but this is simple and cheap. If you rag them from cold, bad things will go wrong a lot quicker than the same thing on a 4 stroke. But then if you keep doing that on a 4 stroke, it'll be a lot more expensive to fix.

Matoxic wrote:

Have you actually got a a grand you'd happily be without? If so <shrugs>, good for you I suppose. And, erm, I'm (at the moment) a needy adventure rider... if you could send a spare grand you got lying about too...

Anyway, as above, if you've got the money to throw away... why not? Because if you've got the money, you will undoubtedly get more pleasure from that money by passing your test, etc.

I'm sorry, but I've never mistaken one for a R6. I quite like the looks of the R6 - the TZR 50 is a lot closer to my mind, while the 125 looks disproportioned and a bit silly to me.

As said elsewhere... I said exactly the same things about the CBR when it first came out. Basically, when you can get it for under a grand, I'll happily recommend it to learners who want to ride for the aesthetics more than the riding (ie looks/sound, though neither are my thing). Until then, it's a poor choice.

I don't hate it.

I just think it's rather overpriced.

No way I'd buy one personally, but if people want to buy them it's cool. Helps keep Yamaha afloat so they can make other bikes. Smile

The trouble with tarty 125s is that they're often trying to make out that they're something that they're not. This is made doubly annoying by the fact that a lot of the people that own them will ride in a manner that they think racers ride in. I appreciate that this isn't always the case, but it's a frequent occurrence where I live, and they're invariably the second most likely bods to get themselves killed (the most likely being pedbois).

Plus, I always find it funny when they try to challenge me at the lights: I wouldn't mind, were it not for the fact that it's obvious I'm riding a 600, and they're not. You're a wuss if you don't partake, and you look a berk if you race a 125; caught both coming and going. I just tend to slowly shake my head at them, these days, as if to say "dear god, I hope you don't figure out how to breed".

To put it bluntly: they're dog slow, but make out that they're fast, they sound like poo, but the owners often rev them hard "coz it sounds like Rossi's one, innit". None of this is helped by the fact that I don't like fairings much, either.

Also: over £3K! What the hell is that all about? I could get a 600 and a small car and insure them both for that sort of money!

It's very easy to have a lot of fun on a 125; much of this is from the fact that for the money, they're relatively disposable, they're light, and you have to wring every drop out of them. They aren't, however, very fast or particularly quick.

I don't hate R125's. I don't really hate any bikes, all bikes are good no matter. You must have had your reasons to buy it and if you're happy and enjoying yourself then that's all that counts.

As above, it's too much money for what's little more than a random 125 with some pretty plastics on top, plus it's simply easier to learn to ride properly when your on a bike your not terrified of dropping.

Hi

Another vote for not hating them. However they just have no appeal to me. As a cheap commuter they have some appeal, but at present they are all so new as to be nowhere near being cheap.

I do like 2 stroke 125s (I passed my test over 20 years ago and I still have 2 stroke 125s and even a 2 stroke 50), but part of that is the way they feel when you ride them. Small 4 strokes to me just feel flat and boring.

Not sure that the 2 strokes are really less reliable by default, and to an extra the greater maintenance on a 4 stroke compensates for that.

All the best

Keith

Different people have different reasons for buying bikes so I can't speak for anyone else apart from my sister. She just bought an 08 yellow YZFR125 about 2 months ago. I think she paid £2,200 for it with 3,000 miles on the clock.

I agree with the price of the thing for what you're getting but she has a car and she's only 20. So her reason for buying it was, get used to the sporty feel of the bike and the handling etc and do lessons ready to do her test when she turns 21 in Feb.

To be honest, there's not many 125's that suit birds as well as fellas apart from the sport 125's. I couldn't see her riding a CG125 or anything like that.

So to sum up, she didn't buy it for speed/power and she didn't buy it purely for reliability, she bought it to get used to it so she can get something bigger when she turns 21 in a few months which by the way, she wants an R6 so it makes perfect sense to me.

I'd say a derestricted 2 stroke, though questionable legality, will get you better to a bigger bike much better.
Frankly, I don't think riding a R125 will get you used to an R6 much quicker than a CBR125, or CG125 or whatever.
Sure, it takes a little while to adapt to the position, but the sports bikes are not only a hell of a lot faster, but also quite a lot fatter and heavier.
When I first started riding it did take me a bit of time to get used to different bike styles, however after a while I've found I'm at home (ish) whatever.
A comet might do better as it's very heavy for a 125.

She's since added some yamaha stickers to it as the guy who owned it before hand completely de-stickered it of the 125 bits haha.

But she's done the sensible (er) option of buying second hand. Imagine paying £3k + and only doing 3000 miles, and loosing nearly a grand!!

The problem is, as a new rider, your very likely to end up on the floor at some point. I was driving in London last year, and a guy on a R125 locked the brakes and went down infront of me. Plastics were EVERYWHERE! I know a full set of plastics for sportsbikes is usually about £1000 from the dealer.

I imagine they are still expensive on ebay - due to high demand for non-damaged panels!

When I was on a 125 for a few months practicing for my full test, I bought a SR125, it was the worst looking thing ever, people made fun of me at the time. But I crashed it twice, and sold it for more than I paid for it, without spending a penny on it!

Then I used that money to go and buy a fast 600! This 'to get used to the feel of a sportsbike' I don't accept as a reason...they feel nothing alike! Likewise for handling!

But, as I said, she bought second hand, so IMO that's far better than all these that seem to be locking themselves into finance!

i quite like the Yamaha YZF R125 , its got good styling , not everyone wants a naked bike, its good to ride one(only had a brief go on one) and it gets brilliant MPG nearly 100!!

£3k is alot of money, but they seem to keep their value quite well, and im looking forward to the time when they are around £1k, il definitely pick one up then, its a good bike thats a bit too expensive but they are selling at their current price so doesnt that make then well priced as they are shifting them?

They are on 0% finance as well at the moment. when fuel hits £1.50 a litre it will be the best bike in biking, cant argue with 100MPG and 70MPH
