Hi All

Trying to organize the garage at the moment but cant find a decent (cheap) way of organizing all my tools and other bits from random storage containers and toolboxes.

In the basement I have a old kitchen unit with a cupboard and some drawers which works quite well, so I'm pretty much just trying to find a set of drawers under 1m high (maybe 10 or so drawers)

Maybe 3 columns of 6 drawers in one wide unit, I need to fit them under the bench I currently have.

I have had a look in various places, b&q, wickes, ikea, eBay but cant find anything suitable

So just interested in how everyone else is organising things in similar situations. (pics if poss!)

Cheers!
Rich

Ps, i would love to have a nice big mac tools /snap on chest but they are stupidly expensive so they are out of the question.

I've always liked the look of wall boards for tools, but never had one myself so no idea how practical/useful they actually are. It's easy to see when things are missing, the one negative is perhaps that your tools are on display.

I've only got a 6x4 shed, and thats as much space as I will ever have in this house, so options are very limited.

I've got one tool box like this, not clarke though.
https://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/cl/clarke-6-drawer-tool-box.jpg

Spanners in one draw, screwdrivers in another, pliers/molegrips/torquewrenches/cutting discs in the bottom.

Spare screws/bolts in the little drawers, everything else gets piled in the top, the top hasn't closed for years Laughing .

I have several builders buckets full of tools that see regular use that can be quickly transported without having to carry out a pick and mix before every job.

The socket set has its own plastic case, and tbh that probably covers about 80% of jobs.

Stuff like this seems to be the standard setup for garages/pro's, but it requires money, space and a smooth floor.

i have already got a couple of small chests... this to be exact....

https://i6.ebayimg.com/08/i/001/44/7c/f1c7_12.JPG

but I just need so much more. it won't only be tools but other bits aswell.
i think it will probably turn out being a set of living room or bedroom drawers but I just need to find the right ones.

I already have some stuff a couple of wall boards with regularly used things on them but wall space is very limited due to shelving etc.

A 17 inch socket would be fairly easy to see I'd wager. Wink

I have an old wooden Army mortar box that contains all the tools I need to strip an engine , this goes in the van along with my King Dick socket sets everytime I race. I have a small steel file cabinet ( 12 draw) that contains all my measuring instruments, drills, taps, reamers etc, etc, etc that will not be used at the track in my house.

Big rolling cabinet & box on top. All tools nicely organised, then they're spread evenly across the garage floor. Thumbs Up

Get a big wooden board, Lay your spanners and whatever on it then hammer some tacks into it to support them then drawn round them. Fix this to the wall.

Tada

I have a wall board for the tools I use most often and two tool chests for the rest. Works for me and the tools are on the back wall of the garage, so not completely obvious.

Cheers

Yeah...finally a post where I can tell you all about my latest purchase. (I wish I'd taken a piccie of it now) but I have just bought a container to keep my tools in.

It's a Pirate zip-up lunch bag. It's perfect for all my tools. Okay, it's bright red, not exactly my favourite colour, but for £2, with a zip and waterproof inner...it's good. Cool Thumbs Up

I concur, i thought it was part of the fun climbing over things in the garage shouting "WERE THE FCUKS THE 10MIL!"
Then feeling really silly when its in the house because you left it in your pants last time you were in there.

just me then?

I only have one of these:

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/images/library/product/large/07/070110456.jpg

Not big enough for all my tools really but I can still keep them organised.

Smooth roller ball action gives you inspiration to do some spannering. Thumbs Up

A proper tool chest will work much better than some random drawer unit as you really need shallow drawers not deep drawers.

You don't want to have to take half of your tools out of one drawer to get to the spanner at the bottom, a proper tool box with loads of shallow drawers allows everything to be straight to hand without all that rummaging. Thumbs Up
