lol He had a good point saying that the vehicle was in clear view of everyone anyway- bit over the top but I suppose he has a fair point

Looked more like a galaxy to me.

I don't think the copper was over top and the request not to photo the reg number of the car wasn't unreasonable (loads of people blank there numbers off when posting on pic's on the web but ride with them showing everyday), he either didn't have a clue like most coppers what to do in the situation he was in or they had been briefed not to make a scene unless it was necessary.

But I think you can be pretty sure no one started throwing a tantrum if a picture was taken of their bike.

People generally blank out their reg because of what they're doing in the pic or what they're doing in other pictures they've posted. If the police had similar reasons for not wanting a photo taken of their registration then that's pretty dodgy. Confused

I've only read the subtitles on the screen, my hearing ain't the best and I couldn't hear the sound very well so I don't know in what tone it was said in, but then we don't know if or what the build up to the little speech was either. I'm not trying to stick up for the copper but I've seen first hand the way the press twist things for their own ends and just a few extra column inches.

Loads of bikes on ebay with plates blanked out to, but if that's the reason they were upset then fair enough it is a bit dodgy. I gotta feeling it's six of one and half a dozen of the other, mcn had to find something to follow up on after putting the effort in to sort the protest and everyone knows coppers get upset when people start taking picture of them.

It's easy. The Police officer has no legal power to stop his or his vehicles picture being taken. To make threats of what will happen if someone disobeys his orders is at best unlawful.

Ermmm, the reason would seem quite self-explanatory for an undercover car! Especially one involved in firearms jobs!

There is no power to seize a camera except as evidence for an alleged or suspected offence, so if he did take it off the reporter I'm not entirely sure why Confused They do have the power to look at pictures as part of an anti-terrorism search under Sect 44 - force can be used to carry out a search if someone does not comply, so I suppose that would encompass grabbing a camera to check the picture did not include his registration.

He's quite entitled to ask the person not to take a picture, and quite justified to do so in this case. Looks like his methods of getting that message across weren't exactly up to scratch though!

There can't be that much risk otherwise the cop wouldn't have started going on about how it's an armed response unit, he could just have said something much more generalised and vague.

Anyone who wants registration plates of under marked cop cars can just wait nearby to a police station if they really want, or someone could remember the registration when the armed unit is attending somewhere (unlikely I know, but not impossible).

If the secrecy of the armed response unit is so important then it would seem a very bad choice of cars to send to an event like that where there was bound to be lots of cameras around, half of which were in the hands of inquisitive argumentative journalists who're looking for stories and the other half were in the hands of people who'd be happy to video/photo the police doing anything even slightly questionable.

I can see why security surrounding unmarked armed response units is be important, but not really in the circumstances at some north wales MCN rideout. Wonder how many people took pictures of the police talking with the MCN photographer, with the car registration clearly visible. Laughing

Like I said I haven't listened to the soundtrack but in the text there is no threat of what he might do, also the beginning of the conversation is not on the subtitles it starts with "I've told you it's a firearms vehicle" so something is missing from the start.

I'm not particularly fussed on either side but I don't think it's fair to pass judgment on one side or the other without knowing the full situation.

Not quite, my learning to be a Police officer friend.
The Police have the right to view the pictures held on a digital camera, mobile phone etc. under Sect 44 ONLY when there is reasonable suspicion to believe that any photos held on said device could be used in the furtherance of terrorism. The reasonable suspicion bit is often forgotten especially by the MET and seems to still be forgotten on their web site were after the last time you quoted it I'm guessing you get your information. Wink

He is wearing a uniform isn't he? We don't even know if the guy in the picture is the one whose speaking though so I suppose it's possible they are 2 different people and one isn't wearing uniform.

More to do with the fact that he isn't wearing his numbers which the home office has insisted all officers should do. Without an officers numbers (S)he cannot be identified as a member of the Police. Wearing a badge that says Police is not enough.
