I've been looking at some motoX bikes on ebay, thinking of my next project. I did a search but couldn't find anything on making them road legal? i.e what would you have to do to one? I know the tyres have to be changed but what about fitting lights & indicators & horn? Also the ones I've been looking at on ebay don't mention about a V5/frame n.o, do they have to be SVA'd in order to get a registration?

MX bikes have chassis and engine numbers. If the owner says it hasn't it is coz it has been nicked!!! Confused

You can get a daylight mot, you will only need a brake light and hooter for that, you can run that from a total loss battery if you want.

As for the registration itself

Why a MX bike in particular? Have you considered getting an enduro bike which will be road registered already?

TBH I didn't really understand the difference between MX & enduro. Embarassed Road registered ones seem few & far in between which is why I was thinking of an MX bike.

Reading that site I'm still a little confused as to whether or not the bike would have to be SVA'd? Confused

Perhaps a description of your plans for this 'project' would help people offer advice generally (as well as telling you you're a fool and your plans are silly Razz).

This is why I'm asking the questions mate, quite simple really as I stated in the first post how would one go about making a crosser road rideable/legal? Is it just a case of fitting a generator & different tyres or would you have to change the flywheel as well? Also do you have to have it SVA'd?

But the purpose of the 'project'... is it to get to a motocross track without a van? Or just to ride on the road generally?
Generally enduro bikes make better road bikes, while only sacrificing a little go and being a little heavier.

It would be for road riding, the main reason for converting an MX bike is they're a lot more plentiful than enduro bikes.

There may be more around, but they tend to have harsher service intervals, less options for gearing etc (especially the 4 strokes, which make a bit better road bikes generally.)
Plenty of enduro bikes around when I've looked, in all price ranges.
The motocross bike can be done, but it generally makes more sense to use an enduro, or lower tuned bike.

I think it only needs a rear reflector and a horn, no need for a brake light, I may be mistaken though!

Hi theres, im very new to this site altho you might want to look at this at how to road legal a mx bike..

https://www.visordown.com/forum/forummessages.asp?URN=12&UTN=314198&SP=&V=5

The differents say to a kmx, dt, kdx, crm etc.. to a full mx bike like a cr, kx, rm is that bikes like kmx & dt's are longer piston stroke 2strokes & are in the low 20's bhp where a proper mx bike is short stroke & 33bhp Wink

I have a project 91 cr125 that i am SM road spec'ing & yeah mines road legal! Thumbs Up

Those are trail bikes at best, not enduro bikes which are generally very similar to motocross engines, but a little 'detuned' with wider gearing.

there different engines all together.. not detuned or geared up or down

Example kmx or kdx engine has nothing to do with a kx engine at all apart from being 2stroke

hell my cr "mx bike" Wink flys past anything else 125 on the roads, even a guy who rides around with a sm'd kdx220 i stay next to him

That's not an example because you've listed two TRAIL bikes, not ENDURO bikes, which was what I said had a detuned motorcross engine. The first words of my post, I thought, clarified this Wink.

An example of an enduro bike is a KTM 125 EXC, which is actually I believe quite similar to the KTM 125 SX motocross bike.

Your right there with the EXC & SX because the only differences is purposely build wise, EXC & SX frames are designed for there purpose, everythink else on the bike is the same

To get back on topic, the chatting in here is about MX bikes, i posted up what he needs to read & follow to get a road legal MX bike

plus what exactly is the differents in trail & enduro riding/racing...........

Varies according to who you ask.

Check with the tester that will be doing it is best. Thumbs Up

Hi there...

i am looking for a road legal, taxed and passed m.o.t bike. I would like to get a crosser but am undecided on what make and model to get does anyone have any suggestions..I am 16, and will go as far as £1,000, going to be needing it too and from college

Thanks in advance......

Is this a joke? Thinking

At 16 you can only get a restricted 50cc bike.

Look at a TS50X if you want the 'crosser look/feel!

He's 14 and looking for a car in his last post, oh actually - it was the one before his last - his last was giving me tourist information on the Cotswolds Rolling Eyes

If you wan't the bike for general use (including night time riding) you will need a full compliment of lights, a lighting coil a regulator for your headlights stop and tail and horn and a rectifier for the dc current required by the indicators and obviously the switches etc,the rest is obviouse road legal tyres exhaust etc.

If its for occasional road use between dirt tracks or rough un surfaced "green" lanes etc you might as well have what most call a day light mot,

really speaking there is no such thing as a daylight mot although bikes with no lights are prohibited from riding on the road in low light or poor whether conditions/visability the mot is the same just without lights test the vt20 test certificate is exactly the same as any other but a vt32 advisory will be issued stating that no lights present at time of mot, this does not mean you can't fit a full set of lights later on though but if you do they must all work properly and then you will also need a reflector,

That said you can register and mot a bike with no lights except a brake light (unless its classed as a moped then you don't even need that) you do need a horn that emits a continuous tone unless the bike is pre 1950 ish then the old "ha who ha who" bulb type horn is o.k. some road legal tyres and exhaust and bing bang boom an mot to show dvla to get your reg, the shop I worked at used to mot loads of classic enduro machines like that and a couple of guys on modern motocrossers to.

The regs with lights is if it is fitted it must work or be un wired or otherwise permanently obstructed/painted over etc, if you have side lights you must have the rest including high low beam blah blah blah (unless your bike predates indicator laws/1986 it will need them too),

but if you have no side light you don't need headlight or indicators to pass an mot even if your bike is after 1986, In theory unless its needed to power your horn and brake light you don't need an engine fitted to pass an mot.

indicators are optional for a "day light mot" but if fitted will be tested and must work,

I personaly wouldn't like to be on the road without at least these lights purely so nop one cuts me up or crashes into me.

If it was me i would fit a charging coil and a battery then wire up a horn, brake lights indicators and a cooling fan (for slow riding) and if I had enough wattage left a temperature guage, A nice high quality bicycle speedo wouldn't go amiss either.

To the kid wanting to ride an mx bit at 16, as stated you are limited to 50cc at 16 not to mention 30mph and something like 1.5bhp,

And to be honest even at 17 a 125 mx bike would be way more than the 15bhp allowed so riding a road legal mx bike would require a full licence or some creative bhp restricting probably leaving the bike running like a dog,

This topic of riding mx bikes on l plates comes up often with many young riders believing it would be no different in the eyes of the law as riding a cg because "its just has to be 125cc doesn't it" but most give up after getting insurance quotes of a few grand (and still not really be insured due to the bike being to powerfull for l-plates)
