How different would this country be in your eyes if Germany had won world war II?

Better, worse or just plain smelly from leather and sausage?

We would be the only country in Europe speaking German. And the only one not speaking Russian.

You should read 'Man in the high castle' by Philip K Dick. Its an excellent and pretty accurate alternate history of World War 2. Its set in the 1960's as I recall, and the US is divided into three. The east coast segment is under German control, the central segment is under independent control but is pretty much an anarchy, and the pacific coast is under Japanese control. In that book the Japanese are pretty much the good guys as they treat everyone equally... with equal contempt. The Germans just go around firing rockets to mars and exterminating anyone who looks vaguely Jewish. They are however having difficulty in keeping control of their part of the world because they have to be seen to be strong, so they keep spending money they don't have on rockets and autobahns. There are rumours that the Fuhrer died of syphilis, and with the death of Reichsmarshall Goering and Martin Bormann there is a massive power vacuum.

Its a great book.

Speaking of which, Iron Sky looks like a good concept. Hopefully it will be done to justice.

One thing though, we'd be in a better economic condition. For all his evil, he took a country in a dire financial state and made it very powerful. His mantra of "Bread & Work" would go a long way to fixing this shit-hole we call a country.

Oh and another benefit... Gordon brown probably wouldn't be in charge!

The economy thing is in the forefront of my mind with this hypothetical scenario. Can't seem to think that the 70's and 80's strikes would have happened and industry would certainly not be in the same sorry affair.

Never gave much thought to how it would have affected the US, interesting point of view.

Of course plundering all the Jewish firms and using a huge slave labour force is also pretty cool for the economy. Idiot.

I chose evil becuase I think it is the only word strong enough to describe the vile little creature he was. We're talking about what this country would be like under Germanic rule... Not whether or not we would be happy with it.

Pretty cool is pushing it, but yes, it is good for an economy... It's also evil in just about everyway... but we already know that dont we. Rolling Eyes

EDIT:
that last point is wrong... quite the opposite infact... see post below for details.

Oh, and by the by... The so called plundering Jewish firms didn't help the economy, it actually took about a quater of the countries workforce away... a sort of cutting nose off to spite face scenario. The huge slave labour force was isolated to labour camps. So not really labour in a true economic sense, being that the cost of keeping so many people in forced labour was far more than any financial gain from their "labouring".

On a final note, the "plundering" and "slavery" was wartime. The actual economic gains through hitlers regime were pre-war... i.e BEFORE the plundering and slavery.

Won:

Arrow Financial ruin casuing the collapse of the British empire and global British influence.

Arrow European superstate formed and loss of tradtional trading partners in the new world and former colonies.

Arrow Weak successive goverments and economy plus loss of British industry and manufacturing.

Arrow Mass 3rd world colonization into the western world.

Arrow American neo-imperialism.

Lost:

Arrow Vassel or Block Ally to the Third reich (simular to vichy france were colonies and national goverment are kept in place).

Arrow Cold war between the USA and the Third reich (fatherland decribes this quite well were both are nuclear superpowers with "mutually agreed destruction" preventing a full blown war as it was during the real cold war).

Arrow Collapse of the Thrid reich in a parallel way to the collapse of the soviet union in the late 80,s though a poor economy and funding unsuccessful proxy wars against US interests.

Arrow Europe/Eurasia emerge from Thrid reich with countrys breaking way from the old block and form new goverments just as eastern europe did in the 90,s.

Japan would lose in any way as they could never withstand the massive industral and technological superiority of the USA and lack of available war resources.

My own theory was that once Hitler had the UK and Western Europe conquered, Japan and Germany could both take on Russia on their terms and eventually win.

Assuming Pearl Harbour didn't happen and drag the US into the war, I imagine the world to be sort of divided thus:

Germany controlled Europe

Japan controlled asia

Americas left to themselves / not invaded

Invasion and colonisation of Africa by the remaining parties of the world.

Obviously this is all speculation about what would of happened......

A more interesting debate I think is what WILL happen with the rise on China and how the world will survive when they go on the march.....

I think once Germany were stretched civil wars would have broken out all over Europe, and more and more countries would become independent.

I think Europe would be pretty much the same, the boarders around Germany would look different, maybe some of the smaller countries wouldn't exist, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg?

I think we would be poorer, there would have been no funds pumped into Europe from America.

The country would have little ethnic minorities compared to how it is now.
