I'm considering purchasing a CB400 but can't find a VIN anywhere on it. I have found a frame number, NC31-10 29139, but haven't been able to find anyone or any website that can help me decode it. Is there anyone here who can shed light on what this is before I buy it (year, etc.) It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The frame number IS the VIN you pillock. Wink

What's a pillock? More importantly, why wouldn't it be the 17 digits that every other VIN is? If you say so, I'll concede it's the VIN as I know nothing about these bikes. My problem is, I can't find anything anywhere that tells me how old the bike is or what exact model it is.

Since it started life in 92 as a Japan only model, perhaps they didn't bother applying a worldwide VIN and stuck with the original method of marking the frame/engine.

So, NC31 - CB 400 Super Four (PROJECT BIG-1)

Next I'd expect a year code (X = 1999, Y = 2000, 1 = 2001, 2 = 2002) but 10 doesn't fit.

Then it's just a sequence number.
