Next weekend I'm venturing over to Ireland, that ancient land over't water....

I've never had a passport and I've been assured an English I.D photo card will do, but I don't have one except my drivers licence.

I also have a problem with this, in that it is an old one that's 'out of issue', when I passed my bike test I was sent my new licence and lost it. I still have my 'car licence' photo ID which is what I carry and use on a daily basis, but will this be ok? If they contact DVLA for some silly reason would I be turned away? DVLA have sent my counterpart for this licence back as 'cancelled'(it was rubber stamped as such), fuck knows why they didn't just shred it but anyhews..

I've had a look about t'net and find varying answers, 1 from DigitalSpy:

* In accordance with Article 28(1) of the 1951 UN Convention, a valid UN Refugee Convention Travel Document issued by a Government in place of a valid passport is acceptable.

" - For the bolded, I'm off to the south bit of Ireland, not 'our' bit, does this matter?

I cant really add to this but grr national identity cards.

Although it being expired I can't see why that changes the fact it is proving your identity? Still not sure if I would gamble my flight on that basis though.

I'm finding more confusing answers as I look further into it...

When entering the Republic from Northern Ireland, non-UK and Irish citizens (including all EU nationals) are technically required to register their passport at the nearest Garda station (Police station), but this rule is not enforced at all.

Exactly the same rules apply when entering the UK from Ireland. However, there is currently no enforcement even in the airports. The UK government plans to begin enforcing the rules in airports in 2009 and in sea ports by 2012. There is no plan to enforce the rules along Ireland's long land border with the UK.

Finally, everyone wishing to enter Ireland (or the UK) from a third country needs a passport (or EU national ID card), including UK and Irish citizens.

Didn't you think it would be a good idea to read the information upon booking the flights and/or checking with ryanair weeks ago, giving you enough time to organise a passport in time.

You could fast track by going to the passport people (think they are in liverpool) and have a fresh passport that very same day, but it costs a considerate amount more.

Typically yes, it would be a good idea but as I haven't had anything to do with booking, I had no concerns. It's only when I got curious about my licence being iffy that I've looked into it, and don't want to travel to Manchester Airport and be coming back 2 hours later.

I'm on work business, so they've apparently sorted it out but I don't trust that everything will have been triple checked thoroughly hence doing my own research, I may need to find out who the flight is with and check that way.

Can't blame me for asking, It's a whole new kettle of fish. Embarassed Laughing
