Got a puncture in my back tyre on saturday... been told you can have them repaired but I just asked at a local garage an they said something about not being able to do it now anyway.

That's not a problem, I need a new one anyway but which one do I need?

Pirelli Diablo Rosso is what's on it at the moment but a tyre place said you can just put a standard Pirelli Diablo on an it's fine?

Standard = £92 + £12 to fit
Rosso = £135 + £12 to fit

Nearly £45 difference. I don't mind paying out but what's so different in the tyres? Is it worth the extra doe?

Personally that sounds damn cheap for a tyre these days, but I dont know pirelli's so I cant realy suggest which one to go for.

However, tyre plugging can be done but it needs to be pretty much in the center of the tread, but I personally wouldnt ever recommend it. Ive heard horror stories about it, and I just wouldnt risk it, however it can be a cheap alternative if you need a desperate "get out of jail" card.

My guess is that the Rosso is probably going to make a fair bit of difference over the standard Diablo, so for £45 I would probably take that!

Fuck it, I aint going to be doing any knee down maneuvers in the next 4 - 5 weeks so the standard one is going on it as it's getting sold.

I understand the rosso is a softer, more grippy tyre but if I'm selling it, no point shelling out the extra.

No point shelling out the extra in 99% of circumstances IMO.

I just wanted to find out the difference in the tyres and price. If I was going to keep the bike, I'd put the rosso on it but might as well put a standard on now to sell.

Like what exactly?
I've been repairing tyres for 18 years and not had a single failure, in fact the only tyre failures I have seen on motorcycles were all on tyres with less than 200 miles on them and no punctures.

Sickpup, my mechanic said to put a soft taper screw into it to enable me to ride the 10 miles to the tyre place. Would this be sufficient to hold up?

Well my bike is currently at the local tyre place getting it's tyre plug as we speak!!! My last tyre plug lasted until the end of the tyre life, as I picked up the nail just after I had brand new tyres fitted, as was damned if I was forking out another tonne. Smile

No more than 100mph. Not because of the plug (I actually forgot after a while that I had it), but because I don't generally hammer the bike...I pootle Cool

I had a plugged Azaro on the back of my FJ1200 that was fine for thousands of miles. Fj is a heavy old bus too.

I think he said self tapping screw and yes it's normally fine just don't damage the tyre any more. Would normally fit a 6mm plug ater just to make sure it covered the whole puncture.

Why did it cost a lot considering Michelin are one of the few manufacturers that state plugging ZR rated tyres done correctly is fine?

I have had places point blank refuse to plug ZR rated tyres!

Don't know what the current law* is on it, but they were adamant it was illegal to plug a ZR.

*this was a few years back when I was trying to get a ZR tyre plugged.

It's not illegal. The BS doesn't recommend it but it is legal.

You generally find the places that refuse to repair them keep the tyre, plug it and pass it on to breakers yards for sale or put them on ebay.

Tyre one was un repairable, big shard of glass...

2nd had 2 punctures in 2 different places on the tyre...

Theres also the fact i dont feel confident on a repaired tyre. Always in the back of my mind that it might go down or give up.

I'll give you £5 plus postage for every repairable tyre with more than 3mm of tread. Thumbs Up

Update on me: didn't get a plug, got a part worn instead, only because bloke said I would be needing new back tyre by the end of the year, so may as well opt for a £50 tyre.

It's actually barely used!!!! Bloody bargain.

How many mm of tread did the old one have? and what make/model was it.

Also, you have to ask yourself why someone ditched a perfectly good almost new tyre?!?! Thinking What make/model is the new one?

I think most people feel that way, especially on high powered sports bikes. I actually got a puncture in my c4r tyre once and got that plugged. I was a little wary, but it was the c4r and in the rear anyway ... after seeing that do many thousands of miles in all sorts of 'opps forgot I had that in there' speeds and conditions Wink ... it never gave any problems.

It was that experience which made me think "hummmm, perhaps these are ok??" ... if you look at them when they are done they are a massive mushroom type thingy, there is NO way it is going to come out. Thumbs Up

So I tried one in a bike rear. Same deal, really cautious at first, but then forgot about it and rode it like I stole it on occasions to no detriment!! Thumbs Up

So ... go out and jam a screwdriver in your car tyre and get that plugged first!! Laughing

I ended up screwing a small metal screw into the hole and riding it 10 miles to the tyre place. Got a shiney new diablo on it now.

I actually repaired!? one myself like that ... but not from the outside as a temp fix like you ... I took the tyre off, and screwed a screw in from the the inside ... i.e. so the head would prevent it from coming out, worked a treat!! Thumbs Up

Basically the tyre was worn such that it wasn't really financially logical to have it plugged, but I was too tight to throw it away with that much tread left ... so I did a DIY screw repair!! Thumbs Up

I also did a outside repair that worked fine too ...

Puncture source to the right, my screw plug repair to the left (actually an RC servo mounting screw!! Laughing)

The completed repair, a perfect seal Thumbs Up

The puncture that finally made me give up on that tyre as I didn't have a screw big enough!! Laughing

Excellent work but with regards to tyres on sports bikes, I think it's the one thing worth forking out on, for me anyway.
