GSXR 1100 WP - Loss of power

Hey all.

My ageing purple baby is a bit sick. All seems well until around 70mph and whammo!!! complete loss of spark until the engine slows and whammo again, full power, and the loop continues until I go a steady 60.

Always starts first time, and all lights, indicators, ignition lights work fine, so I'm not learning towards an electrical fault.

I've been told everything from coils to CDI causing it, but nothing definite. I'm no mechanic, so haven't a clue what those things are anyway Smile

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like Fuel starvation or crap in the carbs.

Does the bike lurch or is it like the engine is switched off?

Try running the bike with the fuel tap on PRIME and try opening the fuel cap and listening for hissing noises. If you are running a fuel filter that may need changing. You can get a suitable filter for a few quid so its worth changing anyhow.

I checked the flow of the fuel and it's running very sweet. When I get the power loss, it will occasionally backfire so that also suggests the fuel is running correctly.

I have a CDI unit lined up and will fit it soon to see if that is the problem.

Aye could be a knackered CDI overheating i guess if the fuel is flowing ok.

Also check the coils as the suzuki ones are not great. I had a GSXR1100G (1986) which uses the same coils and they were not great.

It does it in any gear and at any revs until whatever is making the spark stop. Normally around 60-70...ish

I have some coils lined up too as the ones on there are original, so a bit old and battered now. Hopefully these two parts will make her smile again, as there is no fun keeping at 60 on a motorway on my way to and from work.

The dyna coils are a good swap and fit in the same position as stock.

Accel coils also work but are big so need some inventiveness to fit.

Nology apparently make nice coils but have never seen one in the flesh.
