Had a minor prang this evening. mr mondeo man decided to turn into the side of me on a roundabout. my rear set bracket snapped but thats all thankfully. I managed to rip his entire bumber off though. Thumbs Up
Unfortunately its his company car so it will be insurance hassle and the geezer was a bell end.

So BCF - whos to blame? your thoughts please.

Im green, he's red. the rest is pretty obvious.

Been thinking where the hell is that roundabout with lights, the Sainsbury's one! In that case, you're fine its him.

The amount of people in the left hand lane that go past the first exit and cut you up.

I think a lot would depend on signage. Technically, you crossed his lane, not the other way round.

I always understood the convention on roundabouts with no lane markings to be left lane for the first and second exits, right lane for right turn and all the way around.

Certainly looks like his manouver was entirely legal unless signage/road markings indicate the left lane is left turn only.
https://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_070540.jpg

Don't think it looks good for you to be honest. From what you've described, it looks like you turned left across a lane of traffic without making sure it was clear and that you were in the wrong lane to start with.

The roundabout layout is also partially to blame because there are totally inadequate road markings and no obvious lane dividers leaving the area in front of the lights a general melee.

You were in the wrong lane, you should have moved over earlier. He should have been where you were and you should have been where he was, but you should also be ready for those who do take the outside lane as it is not too clear where he has come from or if he has missed a turning.

3 or 4 years back I had similar accident but positions reversed - and I was in landrover, but - the car in your position cut across in front "from nowhere".
He was a no win no fee solicitor too (!) and took it to court - magistrate decided in my favour because even though on a roundabout you should give way to vehicles wishing to leave, that doesn't give you a right to effectively change to or cross lanes into roadspace which is 'in use'.

this shows where we came from.

I have 2 witnesses but i know both of them from bike meets - not sure if they still qualify as independant because of this.

You should have looked

Roundabout = any decent insurance company will get it 50 50 unless you have a very good witness

You both were wrong. he should be over to the right, you should have moved over to the left earlier. You should have checked to make sure there was enough safe distance to move over. You may get 50/50 but next time move over earlier and stop all the fuss in the first place.

If I was you I would concentrate on the fact that he hit the middle of your bike and suggest he hit you because he wasn't looking. Aim your accident report in that direction and you will probably win regardless of fault.

You asked for thoughts.
Mine are in agreement with Stinkwheel and Skudd above.
As said, you'll probably be offered 50/50 as less hassle for both insurance companies.

You being in the right hand lane and wanting to leave at the next exit assumes everyone in left lane will be turning off, which isn't that likely if there are no arrows to tell them to do so. That being said he probably could have avoided you if he was concentrating a bit more, especially if you were indicating to leave the island.

The safer way would have been to filter to the front of the queue at the traffic lights then its pretty much irrelevant as you should be ahead of all the cars once the lights went down Twisted Evil

It is all dependent on the round-a-bout layout, it looks like a big busy round-a-bout, so it will have those arrows showing the flow of traffic where to go. Find out where they point to and that's your answer.

But I'd have to say without knowing the directional arrows are pointing, you were both in the wrong as you cut each other up and 50/50 will be the outcome.

In all cases watch out for and give plenty of room to

* traffic crossing in front of you on the roundabout, especially vehicles intending to leave by the next exit

* motorcyclists

However you often get idiots like him who expect to be able to drive around in the outside lane and everyone else to get out of their way. So poor obs!

You were not in the wrong lane, that is the right way from the way you entered the roundabout, you were going 3/4 right?

He was in the wrong lane and should have either been more careful or just driven the wrong way ie turned off then re joined the roundabout again after turning round, but nobody does these days.

That said right and wrong is no use on a bike, I try and see a vehicle which is going the right way ie turning left and keep just behind it to make sure is turning then use it is a shield by riding alongside, but you are knackered if everyone is going the wrong way, i suppose if in doubt go right round and try and get in the left hand lane.

we have some roundabouts which are virtually impossible to ride round safely with three entries on and only two off then lane swapping half way round at the area where people exit. It is a miracle everyone keeps missing each other.
