I spotted this bike, a VFR800FI-X https://justwings.co.uk/cms/index.php?id=44&tx_ttnews[swords]=600&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=202&tx_ttnews[backPid]=43&cHash=1d462fcfb9 and wondered if this is the right one? By that I mean is it the best VFR800 to get?
IIRC the VTEC model is the one to avoid and the FI models are the ones to get, correct?
Opinions please. Also I would be looking to get the price down but I can sort that bit, I'm good at haggling and getting freebies etc. Reason I'm looking at VFR800's is simply because I love V4s. ____________________ Rides - '60 Plate Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.25, '03 Plate Kawasaki ZX6R B1H and an '87 VFR400 NC24

I love my VFR I think I will always have one no matter what else I buy.
Its a 2000 FI or interceptor I think they are called in the states.
Had me (230lbs+ depending on what day it is) my missus (100lbs but if she asks its 90 )
The tank bag extended and full and 2 panniers full and we were able to sit all day long with very little discomfort and overtake when we needed to/pleased. Very little wind battering with the fairings and a lovely sound from the engine.
you can get about 260miles from a tank depending on your driving and that costs about £16. Its a honda so its a great engine that should last you for years.
If you want something nimble that can take the wieght and still looks sporty then I would go for a VFR.
book states 0-60 in 3.2secs 0-100 4.2 seconds so more than capable and has all round powerband so very forgiving if like me you have pulled off in 3rd daydreaming
If you want to save a few quid then Yamaha thundercats are meant to be good ST's as well.

The VTEC has unpredictable power delivery and also has that dreaded valve clearance service at 16k miles. As it's a V4 it's more expensive anyway with two heads to dismantle but, with the VTEC system, the VTEC valves have to be tested too, which requires pressurising the VTEC oil system. This means that the job has to effectively be done 4 times (2 heads, twice each) and has been rumoured to cost £700+.
The linked brakes are actually surprisingly easy to rremove, if you don't like them, HEL and Goodridge do kits of all the brake lines you need for the VFR and the Blackbird.
I would go for the 800 pre VTEC, if I had a choice of the bikes above.
Cheers

Didnt know anout the cost involved in the servicing
I do agree from all I have heard and read (on forums) that the best option is a pre vtec. ____________________ VFR FI 2000- Shiney Red Thing

I've got the last 750 and it's great, does everything from touring to hooning but the brakes could be better (the 800s have 4-pot callipers the 750s have 2-pots). The 750 is easier to work on in terms of getting plastics/bits and pieces off then on again.
Must say I count on around 160 miles from a tank. I've had the light come on after 120 when being silly.
The more gear you pile on them, the better they seem to like it. The handling gets progressively more "planted" the more weight it's carrying. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
