FZR600 swap

Was discussing with my local breakers man about getting one of the old FZR's he has in the yard.

For an old model, it has twin pot front brakes so pre-91 I think, he wants 350 for it with a running engine and no MOT.

What does that price sound like? I'm also unsure of milage (will check), but is there anything that goes majorly wrong with these bikes?

Was gonna trade in the GS to him which he said would knock 200-250 of the price so I'd in effect be getting it for my GS and 100 quid or so.....

Have you heard the engine run?

Check the fork seals are intact and the chrome on the stanchions are good. Are the brake discs servicable?

If you can get it on the stand check all the bearings are good.

Do the electrics all work?

Any of the wiring and steelwork rusted badly?

It needs switchgear putting back on etc etc but he says he'll do that before selling it. Haven't seen the engine run but also thats a condition of sale so he will have it running before selling it too.

I'll check the discs when I'm next down....

What do you think it will be like performance wise? I'm not too fussed really but even with age, it should still do a ton twenty and burn off most cars right?

if the engine is healthy then 140+ is possible.

Don't the FZRs have the second gear issue or was it only the later ones?

my 94 fzr600r has a slight issue with 2nd gear as they are the foundations of what the R6 engine was originally built upon, some fresh oil sorted her, fine again.

I assume 2nd gear canery is what does it harm/ jumps out / whatever?

If one is to go steady in 2nd and open up in other gears no probs right?

Yeah thats fine,
the way to check like with any of em is go along low rev change into 2nd and just pin it till you get high in the range and see if it jumps out.

I had one and it was 3rd gear that was arsed,it felt like the chain was jumping round the sprockets.It was actually jumping out of gear just jumping in and out,whatever it is in the middle of the gear cog was worn,so the gear wasn`t tight on the shaft

And you can`t remove the gearbox seperately you have to strip the whole engine down.

Never heard of it happening on another one though.

I had a '91 FZR, lovely bike.

Saw 220kph on the speedo with it still accelerating, so a real world 135/140 is likely.

18" rear is a pain though, difficult to get decent tyres.

Mine did have a very slight second gear issue, but only really happened when caning it from first to second, and even then it was only infrequently.

Nice handling bike, and built well, well much better than the suzukis I've had.

Mine had 55,000 miles on the clock when I got it, and was running fine.

I'd have another no problem.
