I have had little to do with these bikes: is the drum brake on them particularly good (or bad)? I need to uprate the brakes on an old BSA and this wheel will fit easily, if the brakes will be worth it.

Any suggestions?

I can't remember the exact year but I think CG's have drum brakes on both wheels only if before 2004? Or something like that, it's probably earlier. Otherwise they have drum on the back and a disk brake on the front.

Even the CG's with two drum brakes though I've found to be just fine and have enough stopping power most of the time as really CG's are quite light bikes. So if you have come across a spare drum brake / wheel it might not be fine for a bike that is much heavier than the CG. Which BSA is it?

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

They are adequate on a CG125.

They will be an order of magnitude better than any BSA single leading or conical hub efforts. I presume you're after them for a bantam or a unit single of some sort?

EDIT: If you can make cables, make one up with car handbrake grade cable. You need to drill out the nipple to get it to fit but it makes a huge difference if half your effort isn't going into stretching the cable

Thank you for the reply.

My bike is a 250cc C15. It weighs about 265lbs or 120kg. Changing the wheel itself will probably shave off another 5 or 6lbs or a couple of kilo as it weighs an absolute ton.

What is the weight of a CG125? I seem to have the figure of 250lbs in my mind, for some reason.

A CG is probably comparable to a C15 in terms of performance. Maybe slightly higher top speed on the Starfire.

As I recall, the starfire has one of those sort of one-sided, rim mounted drums so the CG one will be bigger anyway.

My bike's top speed, on a good day with a following wind is about 70mph. As the drum itself is only a small part of the actual hub. The total brake lining area is 58 square cm.

I have no idea how you'd go about it, but the CG weighs about 250 pounds so it should be effective enough for your bike Smile
