Hi everyone,

Just wanted to know really but thought the workshop was the best place for it.

Basically since being on the bike there have been alot of idiots on the roads pulling out on me etc. (not just them, people slamming on to avoid animals too Rolling Eyes ) Now, because its a the drum model, whenever i need to brake hard, sweet f**k all happens. So i was wondering if anyone knows if the wheel (with disc) from a later model would be easy to put on mine? Ie. is it still the same width etc. to go on with my forks?
I know i would have to get a hold of a brake resevoir but that shouldn't be a problem Laughing

Any thoughts appreciated
Thanks

Providing one of your fork legs has a mount suitable for a Caliper, it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi

Would doubt you would have the mount. At the least I would expect you to need a different wheel, one lower fork leg (assuming that otherwise the forks are the same), caliper, brake line and master cylinder.

However drum brakes shouldn't be that useless. If anything they can get a bit grabby. It is probably worth checking that the brake shoes are in good condition (both in lack of wear and in not being contaminated).

All the best

Keith

i dont know why everyone thinks drums are that shit. probably a case of ''i heard so and so say it so it must be true''.

i could stoppie an RXS with a bit of effort. that had tiny drums and bicycle tyres made of plastic.

drums are good, yours are just shit.

Thanks for the replies, i dont think i'll bother now anyways but its still good to know. started pricing up and it'll end up being over £50 mark so its not worth it really.

Not true, i found out when some bitch didn't look at a junction, the back is a bit better than the front and i usually have to stand on it when stopping quick to compensate (gets a bit scary in the wet), but thats the way it is and i accept it lol. The front feels like the shoes are made out of cake Laughing

Possibly all that is left of them does resemble cake. Definatly worth checking them out and possibly putting in new shoes. Shoes are curved and it takes far less wear for them to be worn out than pads for disk brakes (eg, random Haynes for the CB125 / CM125 gives the thickness as 4mm with a limit of 2mm, and most of that wear will be at one end).

All the best

hi,
i have drums on both front & back on the mtx.
& found i had to brake a fair bit earlier than i would with discs, until i replaced the shoes & cleaned them up.
this shoes looked fine, but replaced them anyway.
HUGE difference.
now im comfortable stopping from 70, just as confident as with discs,
(& can do stoppies as well Thumbs Up )
cheers,
GAZ

Maybe worth just replacing the brake shoes. £9 a set.

While you're at it, knock the cam out of the drum to give it a clean up and grease and oil the brake cable

I have exactly the same bike as you. Drum front and back and I know what you mean, stopping from above 30, it's 50/50 whether anything will happen.

I took my shoes out, roughed them up with wire brush on drill sideways and they worked a lot better for a while.

Make sure they are adjusted correctly as well. My back brake can lock up now which is good in a way...
Front can barely lock up on gravel at 5 mph. Laughing
