Whens the next-gen consoles out?

The 360 has done 4years now, will be it's fifth Xmas this year....

I'm sure they used to bring out new ones around this time?

I don't think the graphics can get any better then they are now, take Fight Night for example, one of the best looking games ever made & i very much doubt that a new console could top the visuals, may be a bit prettier & a bit smoother but not worthy to be labeled as a next gen console.

I think the next stage will be focused more on interaction with the games like the wii, but without controllers. I think we've hit a wall in terms on visuals tho.

Sony have said the PS3 is roughly halfway through it's life. So how ever old that is will give a rough idea I guess.

Apparently the Wii 2 (or Wii HD) is coming in 2010, PS4 is earmarked for a 2011 release, with MS waiting until then to see what CPUs are available for the "XBox 720".

xbox and playstation is already 1080p, they have invented a tv that is better quality than that yet.
Consoles are already wireless, theres not much more they can do...

Half lyfe, you are talking resolution, not graphics. For example, you have 2 bluray films. One is a mega high budget special effects fest, the other is a poorly made b movie about a giant monster. You watch both films, they are both in 1080p, but that doesn't stop the bmovies effect from looking bad!

I remeber each time a console comes out you think 'oh the graphics can't get better anyway,' but they do...

As far as I'm aware one of the recent comments from M$ was that the 360 is about half way through its life cycle. Bear in mind that Natal is being released late in the second half of 2010, that will impact quite highly.

2012 is when the next console war will begin apparently (Xbox and Playstaion)

Who know where we'll be in 2012? Ray tracing, maybe even something better.

I expect games to be a lot better graphics, look at the jump from PS2 to PS3, its crazy. Expect the same jump from PS3 to PS4?

I think there will be more aspect on physics and AI. So fully destructible scenery, fully dynamic water/fire/fluid effects. Dynamic AI.

Although AI may disappear as more and more people play multiplayer games, especially MMO's.

Who knows, though it is an exciting prospect.

I'm pretty sure before I die they will have something where you won't be able to tell if its real or virtual.

I'm hugely disappointed with the current crop of consoles. Graphics are very good, but the Dreamcast was giving incredible graphics nearly 10 years ago, just look at the original Metropolis Street Racer.

AI is said to have come on, but I'm not seeing it. The baddies still hide behind boxes and pop out to snipe at you like they did on Goldeneye on the N64. Race cars still behave much as they did on Sega Rally on the Saturn in 1995.

The 360 doesn't grab me like the Saturn, N64 or Dreamcast did when they were new. I haven't seen a racing game to top Sega Rally for gameplay, or to top Nights or Jet Set Radio for originality, or Goldeneye for casual multiplayer.

I'd like to see a focus on gameplay and realism. Racing games will never grab you as long as you can keep bouncing off the walls in the stupidly low gravity physics they love to use, if I hit a wall with the front corner of the car I want it to pull to the left and act like it's damaged. If I destroy a car with a rocket launcher in GTA4, I expect it to still be there when I drive around the block, unless I see a low loader take it away. If I unload 28 grenades into a wooden building, I expect it to be destroyed.

We've been expecting the next batch of consoles to do these things for over 10 years. Instead it'll be more of the same shit. GTA5 will give us a slightly bigger version of Liberty City with a few more cars and guns and maybe a new control style. Need for Speed 12 will be the same as all the other ones. Call of Duty 16 will still have dumb AI, where instead of the enemy getting craftier as the levels get harder, they'll just take more shots to kill. Like on the Master System.

I was refering to the marine ai, but i remember this one time with a headcrab, i actually fell off my chair,

Sneaking through a vent, completely clear, one spawned mid jump and hit me in the face, with my headphones on very loud, i dived off my chair, threw my mouse half way across the room and laid on the floor pissing myself at how much it had scared me!

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that sony think the PS3 has at least another 5 years left in it.

It is shocking when you look back to the PS2 though, I picked up a copy of metal gear 2 the other 2, the controls were all arse and the graphics blocky... not how I'd remembered it at all.

Also, while people are talking about HalfLife, any idea when episode 3 is out? Episode 2 was absolutely amazing, and had such great ending!

It's getting to the stage where a rediculious amount of work is required on make the graphics in games. Games will become too expensive if the graphics keep improving, there is no way to cut time out of animating.

Am I the only person that doesn't like either the ps3 or 360?

They are too expensive, the consoles and the games for what it is. I had much more fun playing vice city on ps2 than anything. Even n64, I remember me and mates would play golden eye when I was13 or something, I would enjoy it and look forward to it.

These new consoles are just trying to get it to look more real which might not necessarily make it more fun which in the end, is what they are trying to achieve.

If they put some more time into thinking up good games, it may help.

You can get a new 360 for just over £100 and games are generally £30ish, so not expensive considering the time you get out of them. The 360 also plays DivX and mp3's etc so no need for a DVD player.

Have a look at the other threads, there's loads of good games.

Back in the day I was buying games at £50, equivelent to £100 now !

another half life fan, loved half life episode 2... and that was on a console (i much prefer pc for the 3d shooter games for the mouse/keyboard combo).

ive got an xbox360, much prefer my pc for gaming. i dont take an interest in the next gen console... if i want to up my gaming experience i'll upgrade my pc (if i can afford it).
