I seek the wise counsel of the mechanically minded sages of BCF.

creeping over!

could do with a bit of help got a problem with my scooter, its a SONIK SKYJET YH125T 4 storke and has done about 5000 miles. I'll wait for you to finish laughing, as you can guess it is chinese, but the problem I'm having is that the electrics seem to be short on sparking the engine to life, I've tried new spark plug, new coil, new c.d.i. unit and checked all the wiring there is life in the electrics but it won't start the engine, I have been told that it may be the generator but I am hoping for a less costly cause to the problem, any suggestions of anything else I may need to check or change please?

will it turn the bike over but just not enough to start?

if so could be an earth issue some muppet on my last bike (also chinese 4t) had put the earth on a painted surface so struggled to get her to do anything electric until she was running

also once you have the bike running check the voltage at your battery should be between about 13.5-15v

will it start with a fully charged battery?

what colour spark do you get if you take the plug out and eart it against the bike and try the ignition?

don't get any spark if i do the above, tried it and nothing, the battery is a 12v 6a and is fine (checked it). as i say replaced quite a few parts and have been advised the generator could be a problem, but they hadn't seen the bike and totally discouted every other suggestion such as cdi unit or coils, so not sure whether to trust this advice, would a fuel issue cause this sort of problem? I am doubtful it is the fuel but clutching at anything at the mo just to avoid further expense if i can help it.

if your not getting a spark from earthing the side of the plug on the engine then that would be your issue.

no matter what fuelling your getting/not getting without a spark its not going to do anything, so that would be my first point of call.

when you take the plug out is it wet/smell of petrol?

check all your coil connections and earths and go from there but the generator could be the problem but only being on 5000 miles i would say unlikely but possible

have you not got a local motorbike shop who could have a quick peak just to confirm the fault?
