Has anyone taken their bike to uni or somewhere where you don't have your garage and not many tools.
Do you have to give up and take it to a garage for simple things like a oil + filter change?
Planning on bringing my bike up to uni next week, can't really be going home to maintain it being 170 miles away.
I might bring a few tools but there's nowhere really to work on it either.

I work at a university, and to be honest, I've done much of my maintenance in any free time I get at work. Just don't get loads of oil all over the ground, and I can't imagine you'll have any trouble. You're quite likely to get a fair bit of interest from passing students, too, in my experience.

I've always taken my bike to uni and will be doing so next year, I've driven there most of last week at about 120 miles each way! Its easier to just do the maintenance when the bike is back home tbh. The tools dont take up any real space, but working on it does. If its parked in the road, have you thought about security for it? I parked mine in a residential car park at the back of the house and someone tried to knick it, only reason they failed was because they blew some fuses when they attempted to hotwire the ignition!

I'm thinking for security a cover (weather protection also if you can't see it you won't nick it?), and a big chain.
Its on campus but near the main road, we aren't allowed to use the car park but I was thinking I can stick it round the side near the window (ground floor which helps).
Ok I reckon I will do at least oil changes at uni and keep some tools with me.

I messed about with my SRAD in the carpark at uni. Never did oil and/or filter there, but I did mess about with pretty much everything else.

An argos cover and a big chain will stop people nicking it, and keep it dry etc.

I'm in Halls with my bike atm.

Just bring your tool kit down and keep it in your room. Security don't really care what I do to it as long as I dont spill oil.

Failing that, road legal pit bike in your room.

If your bike's got a motorcycle club and a garage they allow you to use, then it's ideal. There wasn't much of an issue with working on my bike at Uni. I lived in private accomodation for my entire time at uni though. That said, if you can make friends with workshop monkeys, then it's very easy to pursuade them to lend you their tools.

When it was a Poly they had a bike club as well. They had a garage in the car park of the Nuffield Centre with a load of tools.

All the best
