Left Handed Threads - Left Handed Nuts?

If you have a left handed thread, do you need a left handed nut, or is a nut bidirectional?

a ''hilarious'' trick for mechanical apprentices is to give them a left handed nut to screw onto a normal thread.

i just ran a tap down it and MADE it fit

my fitter was a bit suprised.
