Would your licence still be a provisional if you had a car entitlement
and had never taken a test for cat B( car )and had a cat A bike licence?
It just gets more confusing.

On a provisional you can ride a 33bhp bike, showing L plates, BUT only under the instruction of an instructor.
If riding on your l plates alone then you must stick to the A1 powered bikes.
The category A is to allow you to take lessons on a 33bhp to prepare for a test ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! "

Hi
Not sure with your Irish licence.
However at 18 on a provisional UK licence you can ride up to a 125cc bike of up to 11kW as a learner with L plates (on the mainland you must have done CBT, but that doesn't apply to Northern Ireland).
If you pass your test you can ride a bike of up to 25kW (33hp) without L plates. You are limited to this power for 2 years. If you get to be 21 you can do direct access which allows you to do a test on a bike of at least 35kW (I think) and if you pass get a licence that doesn't subject you to the 2 year / 25kW limit. However you can only ride the 35kW+ bike while learning when accompanied by an instructor.
There is also the option to do accelerated access if having passed your test you become 21 while still under the 2 year / 25kW limit.
All the best
