Deferring uni for a year, amongst other things, help?

Has anyone ever taken a year out of uni? I am in between my second and third year, but have had a lot of stuff going on and I know that I am not in the right place mentally do actually do my third year and do it well.

How do I actually go about deferring a year? Is it complicated? I have sent a few initial emails but the uni are being useless at getting back to me. I am worried that next sept I won't feel like going back, but I know if I do my third year now I am going to get a crap degree.

If I do have a year out, I need to get away, so I am thinking about applying to work for PGL (crappy pay, but good fun) as I have worked at activity centres etc before so have lots of experience with working with kids, has anyone ever done anything like that, or even direct experience with PGL?

Thanks in advance for the advice, I am not having a great time of things at the moment!

Haven't you left it quite late? Aren't unis starting any day now?

Instead of emailing them or asking random strangers off the net, go to see them to discuss your options.

I have to say that as an employer, I'm not sure I'd be impressed with somebody who took a year out while at uni. If you can't hack the study life, how can you hack working life?

Depending on your problems, talk to the student services or your GP, and try to keep going. You probably won't want to return to Uni after a year out at work, so it could be two years wasted. Taking time out and working with kids for a year may not solve your problems anyway.

If you do take the year out, don't bum around, get an industrial placement in a role that relates to your degree. I found that with just 1 year after finishing University, I had more enthusiasm and drive to learn than I ever did at Uni.

I haven't taken a year out (though I did have the option to), but the reason I'm answering is because my friend did. Her excuse was she was about to give birth. But she did indeed go back and finished with a 1st...all credit to her as a single mum.

I would be inclined to finish the course and then go off and do the PGL thing. As it is, you could go and work for the local leisure services, doing playwork/youth work in your spare time, earning a few pennies plus keeping in with the kids thing. Will give you something to put on the PGL application form after uni.

i took a year out and enjoyed it so much i took another, so i start uni in september 2010 now

you just need something worthwhile to do or its pointless ive taken up new sports such as sky diving and scuba diving and ive been travelling too, i also volunteered at an outdoor centre for 3 months and did some charity events

Well, I passed my resits so I am into this year, and I am gonna try and stick it out. Got a few more good uni mates, and am joining the ultimate frisbee team so hopefully make some more friends and stuff will be a bit better, we shall see.
That way, I will be done by june/july next year, have a whole summer of working and got about 5 horses to back, and a few more to compete, then off to oz or nz, take some time out from the people who have complicated my life over the last few years, just really hope I can stick out uni until then!

I took a year out between my 2nd and 3rd years. I did it to top up the finances and gain some work expirence. I'm going into the 3rd year far more up for doing some work and know that i am now far more employable.
