Hi, I'm thinking of getting a moped for commuting and need some advice. I have a full pre-2001 car licence.

I don't really want the hassle of taking a test again, so I'll go for a 50cc model. However, I think 31mph is a little slow for the length of my commute. I know you can de-restrict them, but I don't want to break the law. I understand that older ones aren't restricted anyway, but I don't know which age I should look for. Ideally, I want:

- not restricted
- good availability of parts
- good mpg

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have no problem with an "older" bike (I drive a Morris Minor) but just want it to go a little faster than 31mph!

Thanks,

Neil

Hi mate and welcome, why not do your cbt and get a 125 which would be better suited to your needs, if you still dont want to do a test after 2 years just redo your cbt. Cbt is quite easy, just a few maneuvers in a car park, then a ride on the road. Its really just to make sure you can ride sensible and safely.

I agree with the above poster. If you searched for an older 50cc then finding parts may become an issue. And if you need more speed you are probably better off going for a 125cc anyway. The CBT is very easy and as the above poster said you can always just retake it every two years. Have a look at the normal 125cc commuter bikes.

Honda CG125
Suzuki GS125
Suzuki GN125
Yamaha YBR

etc.

There all very cheap bikes, insurance will be nice and cheap too. Road tax is only £15 per year and they will cost next to nothing to fill up.

Do CBT, it's not a test, it's a 1 day training.. After that you can ride 125cc for 2 years.. And the speed will be 70-80mph, enough for long distance commuting (you cannot use motorways until you pass full A test though)

As the other have said, if you don't want to do a test do the CBT and ride on that, and just retake every 2 years.
That's pretty much what I am doing, though if I happen to come into a bit of spare cash in the meantime I'll do my DAS Very Happy
Not bothered though as quite happy on the 125 for now...but if I have the cash for the DAS why not eh?

Do your CBT, pop on a 125 Smile best option, don't see it as a test but just getting more grasp on bikes
