New biker with some beginner queries!

Hi everyone!

I'm 22 and looking into getting my first bike, so I'm completely new to this game!

First of all, it is my understanding that I'll be able to ride a 125cc bike under 11kW with L plates on a normal Uk car license?

I'm really looking for something to ride in the summer months and then kick into the garage during the winter. I'll always have a car, but too many projects and not enough time means it has to be cheap, easy to fix and reliable.

I really fancy the supermoto style of bike and as such have been looking into it a alittle. There seem to be a few kind of mini SM's on the market but the one that screams reliability and time-proven engineering is the yamaha DT125.

I know the did the 'x' model from 2005, and prior to this it was a motocross only 'r' model. As tempting as it is to buy a tidy, low mileage 2005 bike, that's going to cost in the region of £12-1300 and I don't actually want electric start and an oil mix pump etc, I'd be quite happy premixing. I'd also want to retrofit the earlier CDi unit to allow more revs etc.

If I buy an older 'r' model, apart from the tyres obviously, and the larger front brake, what else is different between the two models? What else is involved in aachievingthe SM look and ride?

Sorry, yeah I realise I'll need CBT. What I meant was i dont need a theory test or practical test to ride a 125 initially. I didn't realise the provisional motorbike entitlement wasn't automatic, do you know off hand what the code for this is?

I'm only 5'8 and about 65kg, Yet to sit on a DT and check if the frame is actually a suitable size but I'm assuming it will be ok?

Yeah, not feeling knobblies on the road so they would definitely be changed. I think the new SM version of the DT comes on Pirelli Sport Demon tyres which don't look too expensive but if there are any better options for a grippy commuter tyre I'm open to suggestions!

You're looking for a provisional A category. Usually found on the counterpart if you've got a photocard.

I'm about 5ft 9 and the dt is an ok fit. I don't own one but have ridden one. You may find that your only just touching the floor though. However if your wearing boots that tends to help a bit.

So what does everyone reckon to the two possible routes?

Tidy 4 year old standard bike versus a bit of a project to get something which is simpler and lighter and hopefully a little cheaper?

Personally if I was you I would go for a tidy standard bike. Get yourself a nice cheap 125cc, get some experience on the road at minimal cost and save the pennies for the big bike test and a bigger bike. As much as I would love a DT 125cc I find them too expensive and will be getting a little CG for the next year before I upgrade to something a bit bigger.

Obviously you know what you want to do but I reckon you should go for the cheapest route and save your money for the test/bigger bike etc.
