I appreciate the intention and application of astroturf but why, oh why, does it maintain the cushioning properties of barbed wire wrapped around a cheese grater?

I'm currently sporting a lovely four inch wound near my elbow from a less than graceful tumble two nights ago while I was playing football. I was hardly moving at the time, and was just taken off balance during a tackle which has left me looking like a retard who falls off his bike without leathers on. Two days on and it's barely started healing and still hurts like feck when I knock into it. It's only just got past the "sticking to everything it touches and leaving manky goo everywhere" stage. Nice.

Surely in this day and age someone could invent a playing surface which doesn't become a swamp after a light drizzle but also doesn't make someone look like they've been mauled by a shark if they lose their balance. Tarmac would be better... It's not like astroturf excels in the department it's designed for; our all weather pitch is often deemed unsafe (and closed) after heavy rainfall or frost! Rolling Eyes

Good astroturf pitches are watered daily. Lot less friction.

The pitches we play have an awesome soft astro that doesn't graze. It's covered in tiny black rubber 'beads' instead of the usual grit of normal astro (lovely picking that shit out of your knee Sick )

So it does exist, it probably just costs more.

I've played one of these. They must cost a fortune since hardly anyone seems to use them!

Ours has a liberal amount of sand (read: a beach's worth) lobbed on it weekly. It makes picking it out of your graze in the shower more fun!

But you will have some nice scabs to pick when it all dries up.

If you like that sort of thing Shifty

I vote for shop/offiice carpet(carpet with a number 0 cut) to be banned to, its just a cheese grater. Cant even sit on it without getting an itchy arse.

Played 5-a-side with some mates a few times in bradford (called Goals iirc if anyone knows it). They seem to have that rubbery stuff.

Even though i managed to fall over a few times, didn't get any grazes and despite my shit attempts at playing football, seemed to be a pretty good surface.

I remember the sandy astroturf stuff at high school though, was aweful. If rugby was cancelled due to frost (pussys, i would of played regardless) we used to go on the astroturf to play football or whatnot.

Almost as bad as falling over on the indoor sports halls with the shiney floors, friction burns on epic proportions Crying or Very sad

I should explain, when I worked in a music shop we had that carpet and there was a lot of sitting on the floor surrounded by piles of cds sorting them out. Plus a chance to not stand behind the till was great, little prices like itchy arse must be paid for sitting on it and not having sore feet by till.

Yet the black shit gets everywhere. In your football boots. In your boot bag. In your car. In your house. EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE.

Can you tell I hated this shit in Powerleague football?

By the way, the black stuff got everywhere.

True, but I still prefer it over the skin slicing sand. We have a small pitch where it has this new faux turf with the rubber, its brilliant.

Nice and smooth, but soft and really grippy too, I wear moulded studs on it as I find it can be quite slippy with asto's when when really wet. There are quite a few of these pitches near me now. The one I use is only a small pitch in a Village but we've had it for about 2 years.

But your right you will find the black stuff in the your bed 2 days later Razz

Back in my rugby days, we used to play against Andover, which is basically one large military base, so their rugby teams tended to be full of super-fit, psychotic nutters. If that wasn't bad enough, their pitch was on top of an old landfill site and was 99% sand, 1% grass.

The friction burns from being dragged across wet sand were lovely, to top it off they always beat us as well, usually through being ten times fitter.

Cheers

Grim

Yes it seems the way that club rugby teams sort out their shit churned up pitches is to chuck a tonne of sand on it.

I never liked the skin on my knees and elbows anyway Razz

Our local astroturf is more like sandpaper. If you fall over you get a hell of a deep graze. Worse than that though is the sand. It gets in your shoes and socks your picking it out of your toes in the bath its horrible.

Bad astro surfaces are the work of the devil.

The only permanent scar I have on my whole body is from Astroturf.

Run over by a car - 1 week in hospital - no scars.
Fell over on some astro turf - permanent arm disfigurement.
