Going to have a looky loo at this ZZR tomorrow, anything I should look out for specific to this bike? Any unusual noises I should listen out for? Any odd gearbox funny business?

Ta in advance. Very Happy

Now I know ZZR's have a history of wierd colour schemes, the purple and orange springs to mind, but that takes the biscuit Shocked

Each to their own though Laughing

As to the bikes, In my experience they are pretty indestructable but why the paint job? Has it been down the road?

Other than that, just the usual things, quiet engine with no smoke, especially on start up. Cosumables have plenty of life left. The chain, sprockets, pads and tyres can add up to a fair bit.

I've just read the blurb in the advert, C&S will need replacing shortly - means its fucked so add another £100 to the price and ask yourself if its worth £800.

Personally I would think that's a little high.

I can always talk him down a bit Wink . Yeah, the paintjob is pretty foul, to be frank I don't really mind if it's been down the road or not, so long as it's not obviously bent. Every bike i've owned so far apart from two has been down the road before I've got it. My main concern is whether or not it'll get through it's next MOT. Chain and sprockets is pretty meh, consumables innit?

Just looking for a cheap bike to do some commuting on as I'm moving out and further away from work. Sports tourer type thing would not be my first choice at all but after a bike career consisting of nakeds and motos I like the idea of some weather proofing. Smile

If it's a dog I'll walk away, I'm perfectly capable of seeing if it's a piece of shit. I'm talking about stuff like the 2000ish R6s popping out of second when ragged as an indication of being shagged type information. I really know nothing about the ZZR.

Cheers for the info though, shall come in handy. Thumbs Up

That looks like a D variant so I'm not sure how relevant my info is since I had an E, but the only thing I remember needing to look out for was rotten downpipes, warped front brake disks and rattly cam chains.

Mine prooved to be utterly reliable and never let me down once, great bikes Thumbs Up

That's cool, this one looks like it's got a set of waveys on the front so the discs shouldn't be an issue. Also looks to have a stainless exhaust all the way through, but won't know until I look tomorrow.

Just leaves the rattly cam chains. Gonna have to do some listening. Thumbs Up

If it's the same lettering configuration as the ZZR1100, 1990 is a C model.

Not a bad bike overall, not much low down grunt but plenty of fun over 7000 revs. I'm guessing it will have already had its downpipes changes or they will probably be like swiss cheese by now acording to form. The only issue I've had with mine was a rattle from the clutch caused by a notchy basket which doesn't hamper performance any. It's a Kawasaki expect industrial noises Very Happy

Sounds good, I've heard that Kawasakis are pretty vocal bikes usually. I've ridden a friends kwaka and informed him there must be something wrong with it as it sounds like death approaching, only to be told that not only did it sound like that from new, but it had actually gotten quieter since then.

Insurance is cheap as hell too.

Hi

We have one, although a later shape one.

2nd gear can fail. The change from 1st to 2nd is pretty clunky and gets worse if you are revving it harder. Suspect that clunk into 2nd is what takes out the gear dogs.

Seat is pretty low compared to the peg height. Can be a a bit cramped.

Changing a speedo cable is a bitch of a job! As is adjusting the rear spring.

Front brakes seize up easily.

Tank is a decent size and they are good on fuel (motorway cruising use ours is doing 55~60mpg, so 180 miles before reserve).

Exhausts have a lousy reputation for rotting, but no way will it be original at that age.

All the best

Keith

Hi

One thing to watch out for is the major differences between the early and late shape bikes that do not appear that obvious. Eg, front wheel spindle diameter (and hence wheels not easily interchanged)

All the best

At viewings I always check tire pressure and oil levels. It shows me how lazy is the owner. Sorry! "how the bike was maintained"

But off course it wouldn't work for a 20 year old bike.

If anything Calyx, it's more important on a 20yr old bike. Smile

As has been said the second gear is prone to going, do not take any BS if the seller is telling you its worn C+S - the gearboxes are difficult to find secondhand in good condition (I know)

Sound wise, shouldnt be too bad actually. Mine sounded pretty good and other than the dogs going it would have lasted another 10-15 years I reckon - they are pretty solid bikes on the whole.

Fastenings and fixings are made of a special type of cheese that rusts so if you want to undo them they not only sieze a little but also break away easily too, not a big problem until you come to undo some parts.

Overall though just check the general condition, the brakes are a bitch if the pistons start siezing so take it for a test spin and try everything out, check headstock bearings and all the usual suspects.

leigh Smile

Check 2nd gear doesn't slip or that it stars in that gear when you give it the beans. A 50p part can fail, but it takes an engine cracking session to fix...

Check the rear shock isn't soft, all the bolts are where they should be and that's about it as far as I can think of.

Check it has a DB screen (makes all the difference) and it isn't a silver 02 plated E10 with obvious signs of repairs in the Buckinghamsire area .. might be my old Ded-zed-R Smile.

650 quid in the end.

It's in pretty good nick, for a 70,000 mile bike. Very Happy

Got a folder of receipts totalling some stupid amount of money for maintenance done whilst it was being used on the mainland as a mile eater. For example in the period it was with one owner it had 1,400 quid of work done on it without them replacing anything serious. Just service work. So although it's high mileage the bike has been well looked after.

It rides beautifully, gearbox is tight, didn't miss a single shift, stick in gear, find neutral or clunk when I test rode it. Pulled clean through to the redline with no smoke either on start up or under load. Downpipes are in good nick, and the pipe is a stainless Viper that sounds very nice indeed. Valve train noise is obviously going to be present at 70,000 miles but sounded no less quiet than the 15,000 mile '98 model i listened to a week ago. The front and rear brakes have been rebuilt and the rear shock has been replaced 10,000 miles ago.

She needs a new front tyre (Front is nearly bald, rear is square but easily legal), the tacho cable has either snapped or seized (it's done under 500 miles since the last MOT) and the chain and sprockets wants doing. Apart from that it's a beauty. Cheers for all the help!

Paint the tail to match the rest, getting rid of those nasty zzr stickers in the process and i reckon it would look 100 times better.

Looks pretty damn clean though, especially given the mileage Thumbs Up Karma

You got a good buy there and I hope you enjoy it. Is it wrong of me to really like that colour combination? I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what it was reminding me of and I finally realised.

You know what? It looks really quite good in the flesh, and it's growing on my quickly (like some sort of fungus). All green would be too bland I reckon.

Still liking it very much, seems to be a great buy. Time will tell.

Hi

At first glance at those pics I thought someone had fitted other calipers to it, but think they are just the originals painted black. A common fix is to fit Fireblade (amoung others) calipers. Bolt spacing is right, although you need some small spacers to make up for the smaller mounting bolts.

I take it you mean speedo cable. They are pigs to change. You can just about do it without taking off the upper fairing but I would say not to bother this way. Easier to take off the upper fairing (which means taking to lower off as well) which takes ages. However before you resort to that check the speedo drive in the front wheel. There is a small metal bracket that goes in the wheel (comes out like a tube with 2 square cut outs) and if you are careless when refitting the front wheel you can easily bend this so the speedo doesn't work.

All the best

Keith
