I've got a fairly old computer but am reluctant to buy a new one so thinking of upgrading the RAM.. the computer does what I want it to generally okay so just want to give it a bit of a boost! Laughing

I have 756mb of RAM LaughingLaughing I think the most I can go to is 2GB

How do I find out what type of RAM I need to buy, is the only way to open the case and check the current RAM in it? just my pc is a bit buried so if there's a way of checking via Control Panel or something I'd like to know Smile

Run THIS little program, it'll tell you everything you need to know. If it doesn't make sense just screenshot the results and post it up, I'm sure someone will advise as to what to pick up.

Note: You will need to open the PC to fit the RAM, unlike the iPhone there isn't an app for that just yet Wink

buying RAM is a good idea...

also if right click my computer, properties, advanced, performance options, select adjust for best performance...

this will make your desktop appear a little (hardly noticeable) less colourful but will increase performance i.e. speed noticeably. also while you're in performance options, set your virtual memory to lower and upper limits to 1500 (as long as you have adequate h/disk space).

done and it says 768mb DDR ram and 166 mhz

I'm on the same mission, with the new msn and all the adverts being memory sapping aswell as face fuck and youtube, if i right click the pc locks up for 2 secs.

I think i understand this now, the higher the MHz the faster the ram can be used meaning faster pc?

This is correct. When ever there are no other bottlenecks, the speed at which the ram can be communicated with will improve performance.

Most of the time, the hard drive is the bottle neck in performance in a PC, so by having more RAM, more things can be stored in it meaning less reading from the hard drive what has already been read.

Once you have enough RAM then performance is all about trying to make your hard drive be accessed as little as possible. Defragment, get rid of EVERY start up application and service, heck I don't even run antivirus software.

As a result, my PC has never skipped a beat (as fast as the day I bought it).

I'm looking on a website, ebuyer i think and i looked at a MEMORY CONFIGURATOR and its showing me RAM sticks that would suit my pc, but only at 667MHz max, So if i bought anything bigger than that i'm guessing the pc wont use them propperly?

Ah I got it, I've got PC3200 RAM

So I can put 2 x 1GIG pc3200 memory sticks in with no issues then?

On Novatech.co.uk it has a category for PC3200 so I'm assuming that's the RAM that'll work in my PC Laughing

I used to be good with computers but then I got bored of things going out of date so quickly and now I just don't bother! It's not like I play games on here or anything!

Right this is getting really odd now lol, am on compaq's site with a spec sheet infront of me, it says my graphics is intergrated... yet i have a geforce 6200 turbocache? its seperate from the motherboard tho lol?

1. Go to Kingston.com or crucial.com, select your pc/mobo and it will tell you the part numbers of the memory you can use.

2. Go online to somewhere like ebuyer or dabs and search for that part number.

3. Place order

How many RAM slots do you have?

DABS have generic PC3200 RAM for £22+VAT per 1Gb or £43+VAT for 2Gb modules.

DDR 2/3 is the slot type
pc3200 etc is spec
mhz is speed

If you are running xp pro then you can have upto 3.4gb. No idea where you got the 2gb limit from unless it is a really old computer.

e.g. mine has a limit of 4gb on the motherboard and i have 2 slots. At the moment I have 2 sticks of 1gb ram = 2gb ram overall. I am upgrading soon to 2x sticks of 2gb = 4gb ram. XP pro only allows upto 3.4gb but ram performs much better in pairs of exactly the same stick so don't mix and match.

£114 so far, i need a new dvd drive too, and i want to upgrade my graphics card... man, addin up lol. Am better off buying a spanker for gaming i know but this pc still has alot of life in it yet.

little thing i learned from experience is that you never buy un branded memory, lost two sticks of generic memory to corruption never again!

XlonewolfX what are your specs to the PC at the moment, its a fine line between upgrading and rebuilding

I almost always use generic RAM in the PCs I upgrade.

If you use the right specification then you'll be fine unless you get a faulty one (which can just as easily happen with branded).

Currently running xp sp2, 1 gig ram (2x512 sticks) 128mb graphic card i think. screen shot from cpu-z attatched.
