"Regarding single carriageway roads where the national speed limit applies, the Government propose to revise our existing guidance to highway authorities, recommending that lower limits are adopted where risks are relatively high"

So that gives carte blanche to the highway authorities to reduce the speed limit wherever they want, just by imagining some risk. A side road ahead? Better reduce the speed limit. A bit of a bend? Lower speed limit here. Dip in the road? Quick, where's the 30mph signs!!!

I belive the original plans weren't originally proposed by the governemnt anyway?

Problem is, by babysitting the drivers more and more, they are all just switching off.

Theres a road near me, it is a 60mph limit, but there is a corner that has a huge "40mph speed on bend" sign. Everyone slows down to 40 to go round the bend. (I once went round it at 80 with a fully loaded sprinter, just to be a ceyunt). Where as, in the winter when it's icy, I would do near 40, people still just hammer round at 40 becuase that's what the sign says.

I think one counties ideas of removing all these signs etc is actually much better - people might have to actually pay attention. IIRC they also suggested not repairing roads, they can shove that idea, unless they want to reimburse me for shortened suspension life and any other damage the vehicle might recieve!
