I have heard because they are much stiffer that if you have a front impact the crumple zone is no longer in the upper stantions but in the headstock. This would mean that any hard front impact will write off the bike. This puts me off owning a USD bike. Has anyone had this happen? what are your thoughts?

I would have thought they'd have more give in just bending. Better not crash your R1 then Laughing

Shocked Bikes have crumple zones!?

Frankly I'd worry more about me surviving a hard front impact than the bike.

+1

Or find another reason not to get the bike

The single sided swingarm on my first NC30 probably contributed to wrecking the frame when I suffered a rear end impact by a Vauxhall Carlton.

I bought an RVF to replace my written off NC30.

Insurance can be a good thing.

Not really I've bent the forks on 2 bikes now, both accidents I walked away and rode home! both bikes only needed the upper stantions replacing which is fairly cheap (£90 per side from ABE).

I hate the throw away culture and grow attached to my bikes I would rather fix than replace the bike.

I don't understand the first part and I don't have an R1.

I'm thinking about maybe a 916 next year. I had a spin on my neighbours and it's much bigger than I thought and wasn't crippling infact fairly comfortable for a a focus bike. It is also the prettiest thing on 2 wheels. Laughing

My mate sold his 916 last year for 1500.
He bought it for 5000.
I don't know what broke but it caused the bike to be impossible to turn off. Not even letting the clutch out against a wall did the trick. They had to wait for the fuel to run out, then off to the 90 quid an hour Ducati mech.
Would have cost 2000+ to fix if I remember correctly. Wasn't worth it so he sold it for spares.
It's quite nice to ride though, very stable in corners but getting it IN to the corner takes a lot more effort than say a gixxer. (I've tried both on track)

The weight of the forks plays a factor too, it seems to be almost par for the course to crack the GS500 frame after a beefier fork swap and from all the info I've dug up on it, heavier right way up forks are just as guilty of it.

Hi

Bought an Aprilia AF1 for spares many years ago. This had a front end crash, hard enough that the top yoke had snapped and the bottom yoke bent, with the forks pivoting round the bottom yoke and smashing into the clocks. Despite this the usd forks still appeared to be straight.

That said it is prefectly possible to bend the frame even with normal forks, but steel frames can be easily straightened to an extent (so can alloy ones, but to a more limited extent).

All the best

Keith
