A bike I was going to look at was a category C write-off. I am assured it was just panel damage and everything has been repaired.

My instinct is to avoid - as I imagine getting insurance and selling it on could be tricky, and I'll be paranoid about every little noise or wobble.

Is my instinct right?

Maybe a little bit worried there Very Happy

Get a check on it (textcheck are about £3 83600) and it will give you a potted history.

I've had C & D write offs before with no bother. You just need to advise the buyer when you sell it, Usually makes it cheaper to buy but also to sell.

Never had any issues insuring either

I've had a couple of Cat C's/D's before.

The advantages of buying them are that they save you a decent amount over buying a 'clean' bike. For example, I bought an sv650s for £1200 as it was a Cat D. If it was 'clean' it would have been worth more like £1800-1900.

Cat C's are proper bargains. I got my blade with FSH and 13000 miles and a LOT of extras for £2150. Going rate for that bike if it weren't for cat C were about £2700-£3000 for similar milage. CAT C was declared in 2005 though so it makes no blind bit of difference.

OK, so if the garage is trustworthy and have repaired it properly, I basically have nothing to worry about?

Yes.

My ZX7R was a Cat C, no difference in insurance one bit.
