There are a few bikes that I'd fancy straight out of the show room but haven't the money or the lust for it to be my only bike for 3 years.

Hi

Being a tight git it comes down to money. Depreciation is nasty, but if you keep the bike long enough it becomes tiny (but then you land up rarely buying bikes, or buying cheaper ones as you haven't got the cash from selling your last one).

If I was intending to keep it a long time and couldn't save a significant amount with a 2nd hand one then I would consider buying new (I did with the 1200 Bandit, same with the RS125).

If I was going to be selling it in a year or 2, or could find a good 2nd hand one for a decent amount less (at least 20%) then that is what I would go for.

Some people like the "image" of having bought new. Can't say it really bothers me much.

All the best

Keith

was looking on the triumph website and found a create a bike thing. and i customised a thruxton - my favourite bike. the scary thing is, i think it may be affordable but comes up around 7,500. a second hand one stock for 2008 is around 4500 but doesnt have the custom end cans or other bells and whistles and don't know which to go for. i know if i bought it i'd stick with it for 3 years easy but just don't know. here it is -

I've done it twice, both times I was 100% certain I'd be keeping the bike until it was a pile of rust at the back of the garage. Both times I sold them in under 18 months.

I won't be doing it again.

Then again, never say never.

[edit]

After a bit more thought, I can see a time when I'd buy new, and that would be if I'd found, and lived with for a decent length of time (say 2 years), a second-hand bike that turned out to be my idea of perfection. I'd then buy a new one before they stopped making them.

Not found the perfect bike yet.

I've had 24 used bikes before I went and bought my brand new Versys on 1st of August. Previously I had always thought it would be crazy to buy new, what with facing large depreciation and the possibility of having it nicked.

However, I've been seriously pissed off with previous bikes where bodge jobs have been carried out for no real reason and beneath all of those beautiful plastics, you have absolutely no idea about it's past. Where this wouldn't have been a problem beforehand, where I had a garage to work and had the time to tinker, I now have neither and no tools. A new bike = A known past, reliability and I can take measures against the onset of corrision whereas buying a new bike, chances are it's finish is already tarnished.

If you can afford it and are you`re certain you`re going to keep it for atleast 2-3 years a new bike is always the best option.
The new bike smell is worth the extra money for starters (kinda like the smell of a new born baby Laughing )..not to mention all the other "obvious" reasons why a new bike`s better than a used one.

I`m not knocking used bikes though coz there`s good deals to be had and loads of them with give trouble free miles if you get a good one....but they still don`t beat a brand spanking new one IMO.

If you can afford it, why not. It is quite nice to get a new bike and know nobody's done anything stupid to it before you.

Some kinds of bike hold their value better than others, always take a look at the second hand prices first. Eg when I bought my Sprint, a couple of years old one wasn't *that* much less, especially considering the farkles deal they had on at the time (£800 of stuff thrown in). And I felt like treating myself to something brand new and shiny, so I did.

I like buying new bikes/cars. They cost a lot, yes.. but 0 mileage, perfect condition, no MOT for 3 years, no repairs needed, you choose all the options/color you like.

I don't change cars/bikes often so it works for me. I've had my Aprilia RS125 for a year now and I'm still very happy with it and probably will never sell it even though I'm planing to buy a second bike next year (hopefully new too, depends on my budget of course) Thumbs Up

I buy my bikes new on finance, then I PX them after a year and get another bike with the same payments.

Yes, I'll probably be on finance for ever, but I love new bikes Very Happy

That`s one thing i wouldn`t do.Not only are you paying extortionate interest rates on a bike that`s not really "yours" (and probably never will be)...you`ll never actually get to own one at any point in the future so you lose out on ever gaining some financial collateral from it....(unless you go the distance and pay all the interest charges till the end of the agreement)

In essence all you`re doing is hiring/leasing....but if that doesn`t bother you that`s cool.

I've had two new bikes.

I don't think I'll get another new. Just seems a little of a waste of money in my opinion - picking up a brand spanking new bike from the showroom just felt like an anti climax. I don't regret doing it, especially with my CBR, but don't see the point on repeating that.

In both instances I kept the bike in less than a year. There are also not many new models out now which I'd actually want to buy anyway.

Of course, this opinion is only valid until Honda release that new CB1100F...

It was a CBR600RR8. Some may argue the best bike I've owned. I'd agree with them. But the day I picked it up didn't feel like anything special.

If I had the money, and it was a bike I know I'd be keeping hold of (and when I have enough garage space for multiple bikes) then I'd probably buy new, especially if there were any 0% finance deals going. Plus it's far easier to replace a brand new bike like for like, they haven't developed any personality yet, so not quite so much to loose if it gets thrown down the road.

Maybe one day in the future. I'm happy with my 20 year old dirt cheap CB-1 for the time being, and that I know I'll be keeping for sentimental reasons more than anything.

You`ve got some serious issues if you weren`t buzzing about a new RR8 Wink
If that didn`t excite you i doubt anything ever will.
Or is there "something" that`d make you proud as punch?

Not sure... I guess I will never find out if I'm going to stop buying brand new bikes. Neutral

I'd always buy second hand.

Image isn't important to me, I enjoy fettling and I can get a lot more for my money with a used bike or car.

I buy new, but then keep the bike for years, then buy new again. I don't chop and change all the time as i get the bike I like after a lot of thought.

If you can afford it, why not. With 0% interest deals it makes some kind of sense.

My missus bought a second hand (9 month old) bandit just before the interest free deals came out with finance Evil or Very Mad She could have got a new one on 0% for the same sort of payments she is paying now.

I've bought 4 new bikes since 2004

a royal enfield bullet, a complete bag of crap that self destructed in a few weeks & the dealer refused to do any guarantee work on it unless it actually went bang & stopped

a motoroma Bee50 was absolutely faultless but it was only a moped & I gave it away when I got board with it

a derbi gpr 125 just hit 3 years old had a couple of minor faults but sorted under guarantee

& a sachs madass 125 just hit 12 months old, had 1 breakdown due to a loose connection on the ignition but perfect apart from that

& what do I do most of my riding round on? a 1974 saracen traily that I built from a box full of bits & stuck an MZ engine in

go figure

in the same time I've also bought a 1938 empire star, two rigid D1 bantams, a D7 bantam, a C15, an Armstrong MT500, & I've nearly finished paying for a CCM 644 all second hand

yes I like the confidence of having a new bike (when the dealers live up to their end of the deal) but I prefer the classics, I guess I just prefer the simplicity of the older technology to all this new fangled gadgetry

so the new bikes all go straight to the shop for servicing cause I hate working on them & I wouldn't let another living soul to get within 20yards of one of my classics with a spanner in their hand

I've had two brand new bikes and don't regret buying either of them. There is something good about having something that is brand new, straight out of the box and if you can afford it, why not. I have little doubt that my next major bike purchase will be brand spanking too. Thumbs Up
