i've lived in Scotland, yes. and if they controlled their expenditure (most of the expense in the parliament was through shite project management) with the gas reserves (and proper management) they could turn the country in a better direction than the EU is going to drive everything (read incompetence by rob grant for how the EU will be if it was allowed).

As for the language barrier with Norway it is less of a problem as English is taught in their schools as a main language, so they all speak it (in fact better than most brits). secondly if you have a smattering of german you can work out a lot of the written language.

yes they have to adopt EEC rules to trade but as a country they have already paid off the current pensions (at least) but are also saving for the current working populations pensions by not sticking to the shitty rules the EU lay down.

Well Norway isn't an EU country anyway so you'd need to go through the usual requirements to gain a work visa and then residency etc and from what I know this requires you to speak Norweigan which is fair enough.

SNP are pro-European anyway based on the Irish model who's economic success (although not recently) was somewhat based on EU subsidies and a general enthusiasm for the EU idea.

I think the UK has to decide which way it's going to tumble, either into the EU or further towards the Americas (both North and South.) It would be very easy to sit in the middle and do very little business with either due to lack of backbone.

I would say the Tories getting in will almost guarantee a positive vote for Scottish Independence, at that point we'll leap into Europe, but because we are a small country we'd probably be able to get more out than we put in.

As for us being another Norway with squared off pensions and massive oil and gas reserves? Mmm... I'm not so sure...

One thing i would say about the whole independance issue is this: I wish people would stop automatically lumping an adversarial relationship with England with Independance. Whats wrong with two neighbouring countries with strong cultural and economic ties but governed independantly?

That's another thread though. I'm still undecided about Europe, I have decided that it is a pretty huge white elephant at the moment though.

On the topic of over spends, this is a culture of business across the globe. Big contractors know that government contracts are cash cows. They bid low knowing that it will skyrocket, what government is going to turn round and say, actually piss off and die, we're going to leave it. I've seen it from both angles. (Fujitsu and NHS.)

It would be political suicide, so they take the hit. They've no choice, no other contractor can pitch in and take over, it's part of the government merry-go-round.

I believe it's rife in the EU.

As an englishman, I say good luck to all scots and scotland I hope they break away from the UK and be totally independent from the UK/England... if that's what they want.

I think it's disgraceful that Labour haven't held a referendum like Ireland just have.

The Tories (according to Cameron) *may* hold one if the treaty has not been ratified by the time remaining countries to do so, Poland and the Czech republic (I think).

If it has been ratified by the time the Tories inevitably win the next election, Cameron won't commit to holding a referendum.

So us English, Welsh, Scots (if they're still in the UK by then lol) may never get a say.

I held a referendum in my flat. After counting the votes it turned out it was unanimously in favour of forming an independent state, but will ZANU-Labour listen? No they will not.

Already as we type my freedom fighters are waging a campaign that will see 14/3 Newington Road finally recognised as a member of NATO and invited to G8 summits (although after our imminent victory, they will be known as G9 summits, obviously).
