You can repair it in a number of ways:

Use a timesert or helicoil to repair the original thread, and fit a new sump plug & washer.
Tap a new, larger thread, and fit a new, larger sump plug & washer.
Remove the sump, clean & degrease it thoroughly, then use JB Weld to fix the sump plug in permanently, after drilling & tapping it for a smaller bolt to use as a new sump plug.
Few other ways not worth mentioning/too bodgy.

Personally, I'd go for the 1st or 2nd remedy as the best repair & most cost effective.

You should ideally remove the sump, since it's a simple job and you can then ensure no swarf or other debris gets in the oil. It's quite possible to do a repair with the sump in place however.

Helicoils work by fitting a spring-steel thread in place of the original thread using a special insertion tool. You could do it yourself, but the helicoil kit would probably cost the same as a used sump, or to pay a bike shop to do the helicoil.

My advice is remove the sump and ring-around to find an engineering shop or bike shop who will fix the thread. If you were local to me I'd do it for nowt.
