For any other fans of WWII documentaries:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00n7xky/Blitz_The_Bombing_of_Coventry/

Good programme with some fascinating and poignant eye-witness accounts of the 1940 blitz of Coventry.

My parents remember the blitz, Even then the goverment were happy to sacrifice their own people, see nothings changed.

Incidentally my father was one of the builders on the new cathedral,

still its a shithole and I will only set foot in the place as I still have family there.

The Climax and the Bear Pubs were biker hangouts, the statue of Lady Godiva was surrounded by lawns where we would sit in the summer afternoons, the Belgrade Theatre had a fountain which we used to dump washing up Liquid in and I still remember vividly traipsing round Lady Herberts art gallery whilst on acid, seemed to go to hell in a handcart when the nightclubs started letting in young uns and I recall gun crime in Hillfields, we are talking over 25 years ago too.

I love the Transport Museum and the Cathedral area. Been to concerts in the Guild Hall and it was magic but I would draw the line at spending a night there. I have never seen so many glue sniffers in my life as in Coventry.

I watched it last night, but was extremely tired and didn't take it all in. Will watch it again at the weekend.

I watched it. Was quite an eye opener to see the real footage and the interviews with people who were there.

The plan was ruthless and carried out with typical German efficiency.

According to Wikipedia 600 people were killed.

The Allies mastered the technique to 'coventrate' and nearly obliterated Dresden and Hamburg. Death tolls have never been confirmed but vary form 40,000 to 500,000!

It is why Coventry is twinned with the town/city of Dresden.

I haven't watched it, but I presume it goes on to talk about the fact that Churchill knew weeks before that Coventry was to be destroyed, which goes someway to explain why there were so little casualties.

Coventry has turned into a dump, but I doubt it is much worse than any other city in the UK. The fact I felt safer living in Coventry for 3 years than I do back home in a sleepy market town in Somerset must mean something. I lived next to Hillfields in my first year, many prostitutes lined the area on a regular basis, second year I lived in the middle of Stoke which was pretty much an ethnic area with some nice leafy bits inbetween, never felt threatened. The third year I lived in Spon End, right near Holyhead road and there were areas around the subway next to Lava/Ignite where I didn't feel comfortable walking and running in.

I must say though I do miss Coventry and am looking forward to my graduation in the new cathedral next month!
